@dsollen:I think the adversarial tone is absolutely appropriate. The OP took the child to one doctor and didn't like the answer. The OP took the child to a different doctor, and didn't like the answer again. A soft-spoken answer will be ignored again if it's not an answer the OP wants to hear. As for the developmental delay being related to the vision problem, yeah, it not not be related, but poor vision will not help mitigate the problem. Then again, I've refered special ed students to the nurse for a vision test and vision WAS part of the problem.
Kids seem to like giving a physical object that can be wrapped, and that they will see in the classroom. Gift cards are ok for the teacher. I guess it depends on whether you want it to be a more memorable lesson in sharing and generosity for the child.
