Oct 28, 2022 at 14:24 comment added goodoldamy The point about having a favorite and engaging in favoritism is an important point. Dariusz's comment reminded me of a number of parents I've known who didn't prefer the child most like them in situations when the child reminded them of/triggered past issues or trauma. Even in instances where the parent had resolved the issues, they saw that child as a reminder of what they had to overcome and preferred the child who complemented their personality (over matching it).

yuck...I came back to remind myself what went wrong here, and this bit jumped right out at me.

May 28, 2014 at 12:50 comment added Carmina Ruedas I have 4 siblings but I treated them equally. I don't want to hurt any of them. Each of them has different character traits . As a mother I taught .them to be kind, respect and love one another. When they grow older I want them to remember the good vaues they get from their parents.

Jan 30, 2014 at 4:22 comment added Nick Stauner I can't pretend to know what you all mean by "discussion" here, but I'm done discussing the design of the question...just edit further if you must. Check the edit history and the linked question for research that I mentioned originally.
Jan 30, 2014 at 4:08 comment added balanced mama It is an interesting question to be sure, but I do wonder if it is more of a "discussion" oriented question. I'd be interested to know if any sscientific research has been done on the matter - sounds like good coffee house convo though.

Jan 29, 2014 at 20:12 comment added Nick Stauner Answerers may wish to review all the additional information that has been removed from the OP in the edit history to accommodate breadth complaints. If you've got any info on or experience with disfavor, or 3+ siblings, or would like to consider some basic factors I already know of, or see a related question here on parenting.SE, you might be interested in the noise. Bear with all the red strikethrough, and feel welcome to edit it back in if you find it helpful. You can represent your own interests, and you can help decide what is useful to the community. You may have been shortchanged here.
Jan 29, 2014 at 19:51 comment added user420 I've purged the previous comments, as they are now obsolete (and weren't terribly productive, anyway). @BleedingFingers Thank you for the edits. They are exactly what the question needed.

edited this with the [clear permission](http://cogsci.stackexchange.com/questions/5543/why-do-some-parents-prefer-some-children-more-than-others#comment11507_5543) of OP.
Jan 29, 2014 at 19:42 comment added Bleeding Fingers I'm sorry if edited this too far. But I tried to be as fair and specific as possible. I found some of the point too philosophical and although they were optional i found them to be adding noise. Link's to your friend's blog removed since they were irrelevant to the question.
