Jul 31, 2020 at 16:42 comment added Charleh I don't count gambling games in the above comment - they are gambling, that's completely different (and gambling IS addictive). Monetisation is a big problem in modern games. When I was growing up, games were a form of art and expression - Doom, Half Life etc. Game developers built awesome worlds for us to explore. Now, especially with mobile games it's all about pushing as many skins and microtransactions as possible. It's a real shame, but again, you just need to educate your kids and try to get them to recognise the value of things. They aren't stupid - and you'd be stupid to assume so.
Jul 31, 2020 at 16:39 comment added Charleh In my experience, limiting access to things such as alcohol/drugs doesn't help manage a problem, it just raises those items to taboo levels. Communication is the most important thing - children sometimes won't ask difficult questions that make them feel uncomfortable, that's where your life experience comes into play. You are responsible, you are the knowledgeable one - talk to your kids. Game addiction is quite rare and is oftentimes just an escape from reality - it's nothing like drug addiction at all. Problems elsewhere in a kids life lead to heavy escapism and use of games. I've been there
Jul 31, 2020 at 16:34 comment added Stian @Elmy False. Drugs mimic mood altering chemicals. Behaviors encourage self production of mood altering chemicals. No habit or behavior can ever become as directly addictive as drugs can. It is like injuring yourself because you are running to much is a different situation than injuring yourself because you were driving too fast.
Jul 31, 2020 at 12:40 comment added Elmy @StianYttervik The processes in your brain that make you addicted are the same, whether you're addicted to alcohol, games, meth or porn. Of course gaming addiction doesn't kill you, but it's just as hard to quit as it is to quit drinking or smoking after you've been addicted to it. No addiction can or should be taken lightly. I agree that some addictions are worse than others, but my statement was that "Gaming addiction is just as real as drug addiction" and I will not adjust that statement.
Jul 31, 2020 at 11:18 comment added Stian Hogwash. Gaming isn't comparable to drug addiction, adjust your statements. Drug addiction kills you.

Jul 30, 2020 at 9:35 comment added Elmy @BartvanIngenSchenau That's exactly what I'm talking about. StackExchange gives you absolutely meaningless virtual points for your participation and lures you with an useless virtual gold badge if you login for 100 consecutive days. They aim to make you addicted to StackExchange. Gaming apps are even better at that.
Jul 30, 2020 at 9:19 comment added Bart van Ingen Schenau I wonder what the outcome is if you replace "game" with "Stack Exchange" and have this honest talk with yourself. Maybe I should try to find time away from SE to do just that ;-)
