Jan 1, 2012 at 23:32 comment added morah hochman What techniques do you use for yourself, at least then we would know what you were trying to teach.
Jan 1, 2012 at 16:47 comment added JPmiaou @morahhochman: if I knew how or what to teach her, would I be asking a question about it? I'm looking for any techniques, tips, or methods that DO NOT involve leaving the child to cry herself to sleep in bewildered terror.
Dec 31, 2011 at 23:50 comment added morah hochman What is it exactly you want to teach your child, a technique to fall asleep? If you have a technique that helps you fall asleep that a child can also employ I would love to hear it, but I am unsure what you are trying to teach your child. Sleeping is important but I have found that the only way I can fall asleep it through trial and error of many different things to do...so please let me know the technique you want to teach your child so you can teach me too!

Dec 28, 2011 at 8:22 comment added Torben Gundtofte-Bruun @JPmiaou: I've reopened this question again because you have convinced me that your question is significantly different from the one Beofett linked to in his comment. It might be a good idea that we discuss it in the Parenting Chat because there seems to be something missing from your question to make it clear to readers exactly what you're really after. (Also, comment upvotes are irrevocable, sorry.)
Dec 28, 2011 at 4:37 comment added user420 @JPmiaou you seem to want a subset of answers to the other question (ones that don't involve crying and emphasize teaching sleep-related skills rather than just training the child to sleep). When you post a bounty, you can include a message indicating that you are looking for answers that fit your additional criteria. If you ask the same question again it will still be a duplicate, and will be closed. If you want to convince us that you have a distinctly different question, edit your question and improve it The faq provides some useful guidelines.
Dec 28, 2011 at 3:05 comment added JPmiaou gah! How do I _un_upvote a comment? My mouse was misbehaving.
Dec 28, 2011 at 3:03 comment added JPmiaou How can I convince you people that this is a DIFFERENT QUESTION? Do I have to give up on this one and ask it again (verbatim)?
Dec 28, 2011 at 3:01 comment added JPmiaou @Beofett: how on earth is a bounty on a different question supposed to get me an answer to mine??
Dec 28, 2011 at 1:59 comment added user420 @JPmiaou I'm aware of what it says. If you think that means it is a "variation on Cry It Out" then I'm not sure what to tell you. If you requirement is that any answer involves making sure that your child doesn't cry even slightly, then I fear you will be disappointed no matter what. If none of the answers suit you, you can always put a bounty on the question.

changed "better" to "different" to remove some of the "value judgment" on CIO.
Dec 27, 2011 at 23:24 comment added JPmiaou @Beofett: The accepted answer you refer to mentions "we only go back in if they are crying hard." In any case, it doesn't answer my question.
Dec 27, 2011 at 23:15 comment added user420 @Jpmiaou re-read the accepted answer to that question. It does not suggest a CIO trchnique. In fact, it explicitly says they go in if their child cries. However, even if they all suggest CIO it is sufficient to say "I don't want to use a CIO method" as I edited it. Your latest edit, however, is a much better wording than your earlier ones Thank you.
Dec 27, 2011 at 22:26 comment added DA01 While it doesn't answer your question, as a father who went through this as well, I do miss those days. While it can be frustrating at the time, I think the key is for dad to relax, and enjoy the bonding time. I know it's really easy to say that in hindsight, and I probably would have ignored my own advice back then, but for what it's worth...
Dec 27, 2011 at 22:24 comment added JPmiaou @Beofett: on re-re-reading that other question, I see that my specific objection to crying it out absolutely has to be in the question, because every single answer there includes some variation on it. Every Single One.

Tried to add more specifics to the question to make it clear that the "possible duplicate" ISN'T.
Dec 27, 2011 at 22:05 comment added JPmiaou @Torben: I've read that other question that you seem to think is a duplicate. It doesn't answer my question. I'll re-edit the question again.
Dec 27, 2011 at 20:43 comment added Torben Gundtofte-Bruun I've closed this question because I feel that what you really want to know is very similar to the existing question.

Dec 27, 2011 at 18:43 comment added user420 As I already mentioned, the complaints about specific techniques you don't plan on using are unnecessary. I have removed them again, as they do not add anything to your question, and invite debate that would not be constructive. Please do not add that back in again.

Focused question; formatting
Dec 27, 2011 at 17:04 comment added user420 I am making some pretty significant edits to your question, as I believe there is a good question at the crux of it, but in its current form it would need to be closed (as off-topic due to it being a "shopping" question, requesting a list of websites or books). If you feel my edits change your intent, feel free to roll them back and make your own edits, but it needs to be phrased as a request for specific advice about your case, without the unnecessary complaints about specific techniques you don't plan on using.
