Sep 13, 2016 at 12:27 comment added DadOfTwo I am supporting this answer. Firstly because my kid always says "no" to new stuff - chocolate pancakes included! - and then grows into it to the point of staying after sessions/classes. Secondly, I was one of those kids who would refuse any sports activities offered. My parents respected my choices, so I grew into a super un-athletic teen with poor body coordination, envious of my peers who were into sports for years. I took to rowing at 15 and enjoyed it, but I always lagged behind the kids who had started at a younger age. Not doing sports as a kid is my greatest regret even now at 35.

I taught swim lessons for YEARS, but my son absolutely would NOT let me teach him the basics of swimming. He wanted me to protect him in the water, not make him learn how to kick and move his arms. Now that he has the basics down, he's much more inclined to let me help him with the nuances and more advanced skills, but I still let him lead and when he's clearly done with me I let it go.
