I have an 8-year-old son. He won’t poop in the toilet, only in a potty. If we take the potty away, he’ll poop all over the floor. He’s been tested medically and been cleared. He did before he even started school. When he has to pee, he’ll just stand and do it and laugh at the splash. It’s not the flush sound either he loves loud noises.

He knows when he has to go because when we’re out in public he tells us when he has to go but if we try to talk him he just goes in his diaper. If he wasn’t wearing a diaper then he’d go in his underwear and it would be a big mess. Now when I change him, he starts peeing. He’s only started doing that in like the past week or so. We have to bath him. If we’d left him unsupervised in the bath he would poop in it.

He loves school and likes learning, but does average. He wears a diaper at school but usually doesn’t use it. If we send him in underwear, he poops in them. He doesn’t poop or pee at school, he holds it all day. The school told use he can’t come back unless he’s potty trained. He was upset when the school said he couldn’t come back but that didn’t change anything.

Every time we ask him why he only uses the potty and not the toilet he says he doesn’t know. We tried rewards and making him clean it.

How do we get him to use the toilet or do we just let him use the potty?

  • Who cleans the potty when he's done? What have you tried (besides removing the potty) to get him to go in the toilet, and why did it fail? Does he have siblings who use the toilet? The more detail you provide, the more helpful the answer. Thanks! – anongoodnurse Jul 14 at 0:33
  • I clean the potty. He’s an only child. We’ve tried several things and he always pooped his pants. We tried naked but he just went on the floor. – user35817 Jul 14 at 4:48
  • What does he tell you about his reasons? Is there for example something about the toilet that scares him or is uncomfortable? – Arsak Jul 14 at 8:14
  • What were the 'several things' you tried, and why did they fail? Have you tried rewards? Have you tried making him clean the potty after using it? How is he regarding other 'rules' of the house? Is e generally compliant? Is he an otherwise agreeable child? How does he do in school? Have you ever spoken to his medical care provider about this? Etc. – anongoodnurse Jul 14 at 12:46

It's great that you provided additional information in comments, but can you edit it into your question also? This makes it easier for people to write answer, because they have all the info in the question and needn't read through comments (or maybe even overlook them). – Anne Daunted GoFundMonica Jul 16 at 12:15
