Jan 22, 2015 at 1:02 comment added Kai Qing Lol. I'm a web programmer. I don't know whether to have him email me so I can hire him or warn him how boring and useless this field of work is. With web programming, the motivation comes when you see your efforts alive on the internet. Talk to some friends and see who could use a free website. Let him build them. You can get a basic hosting plan with dreamhost for almost nothing and have all his projects hosted under his accounts. Charge the clients $5 a month for hosting. He will become motivated quickly when he sees his work making money... not that money should be the motivation

Jan 6, 2015 at 9:41 comment added Mark Williams Sounds like the type of kid that will be self-motivated to learn anyway. Encourage by providing kit - perhaps a raspberry Pi would make a nice birthday present, or a programmable robot? My oldest declined to show any interest when young (up to about 13), but is now a professional games programmer..

Jan 4, 2015 at 5:46 comment added user11394 To keep the child motivated to code you need to instill intrinsic motivation, not specifically for coding. While this question is about coding, I think it could be broadened to "How do I help a child learn more difficult material about a subject I don't know?" A good answer to that question will be an equally good answer to your question.

Jan 2, 2015 at 13:39 comment added the_lotus I learned programming by myself at a very early age. My dad bought me the tools (today, you can get a free version of visual studio) and books. He doesn't need to program like a pro yet, just to have fun doing it. I had fun by making games, started with a text-based adventure, then a 2D shooter game. Also with visual studio, he can increase the complexity of this website by making it dynamic.
