The average person is a pretty good instinctive judge of how much they just hurt whoever they smacked. Not a perfect judge, of course, but far, far better at it than trying to assess the emotional pain caused by a cutting word or public humiliation. The key to not causing emotional damage with punishments of any type is predictability. Don't punish someone for doing something they couldn't know they weren't supposed to. Be consistent. Be proportional. And above all: When the incident is over, it's over.
