On Stack Exchange, we believe the core moderators should come from the community, and be elected by the community itself through popular vote. We hold regular elections to determine who these community moderators will be.

Community moderators are accorded the highest level of privilege on our community, and should themselves be exemplars of positive behavior and leaders within the community.

Our general criteria for moderators is as follows:

  • patient and fair
  • leads by example
  • shows respect for their fellow community members in their actions and words
  • open to some light but firm moderation to keep the community on track and resolve (hopefully) uncommon disputes and exceptions

Every election has three phases:

  1. Nomination
  2. Primary
  3. Election

Please participate in the moderator elections by voting, and perhaps even by nominating yourself to be a community moderator!

Hi there, my name is Rory Alsop. I have been a pro-tem mod here for many years, and a mod on various Stack Exchange sites for around 10 years. I currently moderate 6 ranging from the vary technical (Infosec) to more artistic (Music Practice & Performance), and living in Scotland I have a useful timezone for moderating and being around for things.

I am a father of three sporty, outdoors-y kids, currently ranging from 13 to 19.

My answers to the moderator questions are here to give you some flavour of how I approach moderating.

Hi, I'm Stephie.

I have been a member of Parenting SE for well over five years now and I feel I have a good grasp of how this specific corner of the SE universe works.

Over the years, I have noticed that I gradually shifted from creating content towards moderating activities, following the privileges that come with increasing reputation. Throwing my hat into the ring for this election is kind of a logical next step, now that the site has both graduated and is one moderator short.

I know what being a moderator feels like on a daily basis, having been entrusted with my first diamond on Seasoned Advice in early 2018 and a second one on Gardening SE a few months later. While I don't hesitate to use the Mod Hammer, I believe in a strong and self-empowered community - not unlike my parenting philosophy that focuses on gentle guidance and support over giving orders. I do act swiftly and with determination where mod action is needed though.

I am am mother of two (13 and 10) that both have given us unique challenges, but I wouldn't want to miss one day, as hard as some of them were.

My name is Christopher Walker (SomeShinyObject) and I'd like to submit myself as a candidate for moderator on Parenting.SE.

To address my qualifications for site management:

I've been an active member of Parenting for seven years, answering questions, editing, flagging, assisting, and reviewing all manner of content. I am the only member on this site to hold the steward badge, have 209 helpful flags, and have remained in the top 3 reviewers for 5 of the 6 review categories.

To address my qualification on the subject of the site:

I am a father of five. Their ages range from 5 months to 9 years old. We are a multi-cultural, multi-lingual family as I am an American living in Japan with my wife being a Japanese citizen. I have been through the ups and downs of family life and am continually advancing in my efforts to raise my children in a sometimes difficult world so that they become productive members of society.

If elected, I hope I can serve this community well and execute the duties of a moderator to the best of my abilities.
