comment As an atheist, how should I explain theism to my children?
@WilliamGrobman, see, and I look at the exact same universe that we see around us and conclude that it is incompatible with the belief that there isn't a creator behind it. Your mileage, obviously, varies; the point is, if you don't want to teach your children any religion, you need to include atheism in that rubric.

@WilliamGrobman, despite its roots, the word atheism has come to mean an active non-belief in a deity, while agnosticism is indeed the neutral "I don't know" position that tylerl mentions. (There's also apatheism, the attitude that whether deity exists or not is totally unimportant.)

comment How can we keep my niece's hair out of her eyes?
By the "odd angles", I mean that her hair follicles are not perpendicular to her scalp. She has a definite swirl going on at her crown, and you can't part her hair in the middle, because the hair on top of her head grows sideways. As far as washing, she gets baths almost every day (part of the bedtime routine), but her hair only gets shampooed once a week.

comment Do pregnancy due dates accurately measure maturity (and over maturity)?
On the other hand, the size of the fetus that they determine based on the ultrasounds is a ballpark guess at best: a friend of mine recently had a baby that the doctors estimated as close to 10 pounds, but he was actually less than 7 pounds.

comment At what age does a toddler stop being a toddler?
I would make this distinction between infant and toddler, not between baby and toddler. In my lexicon, an 18-month-old is still definitely a baby, while also definitely being a toddler.

To some degree, a toddler is a type of baby: specifically, a baby that has learned to walk. (Not just move around: a crawling baby is not yet a toddler.) There does come a point, though, when a child can be called a toddler, but not really a baby. I'm not sure when that point is - maybe when the toddler has learned to speak in a semi-understandable fashion?

Your son's use of "apple" seems to be like my niece's use of "cica" (Hungarian for cat). :)

comment How do you convince your son to poop in the toilet?
You must have an enormous bathroom if there's 4 feet between the bathtub and the toilet. Just sayin'.

@MichaelF: but... but... but... what is the throne for if not for reading? I mean, yeah, you do other things there too, but the reading (or Sudoku) is the primary purpose, isn't it? :D

I'll note that my mother's experience in this matter isn't much help, because at 15 months, my sister and I had hardly started to grow hair. By the time our hair was long enough to be an issue, we were old enough to brush it out of our eyes for ourselves.
