comment How old should a child be before getting their first cell phone?
I didn't need it often either, but if it was "walk home from school in the pouring rain" or "use the pay phone and see if mom can come get me," I made sure I had a quarter!

comment How can you communicate with a child that refuses to talk?
I'm not sure that's a wise maneuver for an autistic child.

We also grew up with the wide availability of pay phones, so we didn't need cell phones like we do today.

Darn it, you beat me to the "you can't eat it if it's not there!" comment. :-)

comment What to buy to prepare for the arrival of a new baby?
@Lloydie: In the US, many hospitals won't let parents take the baby home without seeing the car seat and running it's serial number for possible recalls.

comment What television shows could I show my toddlers to encourage multilingual learning?
@Andra: But why does she like it? It's probably not because she can read the German. My own children didn't learn language in a vacuum -- my wife and I were there to guide them. I'm not sure that children can gain fluency in a language without a real human instructor. They might be able to pick up words and string them together, but who's going to guide them in structuring sentences, word forms, subject/object distinctions, verb tenses and conjugation, etc.? Who's going to correct them when they make mistakes? (e.g. We say "many things", not "much things")

Don't forget the diapers! (A great tip: One of the conditions of my wife's baby shower was that guests were to bring a package of diapers. We didn't have to buy diapers for our first kid for nearly 4 months.)
