I have spent the past 8 years working at a small ISP, where I manage E-mail, DNS, Web, and Voip servers for a couple thousand clients.

comment When should we allow children to experience spices in food?
It may be the case that they don't feed their kids green curry at 6 months, but I'd be willing to bet that they start feeding their kids things that white Americans would consider spicy (often, too spicy, but that's so not saying much) at that age or maybe a little older. We've had success with this to varying degrees with both our kids. The first took to spicy Indian like a duck to water at around 6 months, the second took a while longer, say around 12 or 13 months.

comment What are the pros and cons of having an advanced student skip Kindergarten?
About 6: Don't act as if somehow your "little girl" at 16 will be a hen in a fox hole. More like "it takes two to tango". Generally speaking, women date older men anyway.

comment what is the best way to potty train a little boy?
Consider yourself extremely lucky. It's taken our son about 4 months before he could control himself reliably, and even then that's "mostly". Times when he's having altogether too much fun to notice when he needs to go potty are when he has accidents now.

How old is your son? Ours didn't even try until he was 4, and that was after years of prompting and suggestion. It basically came down to us saying "You're ready. You're starting in underpants today" in spite of his screaming. Also, can we correctly assume that he's your first child?

So, you think introversion is a bad thing?

comment How do I reduce the time my child spends playing computer games?
@Hairy: Winning at Starcraft (online, against other people) is something that takes study, practice, intelligence, patience, and cunning. Actually managing to achieve this feat gives confidence, is fun, and is something you can all do together. Don't put a jaundiced view on computer gaming, just because you hold no value for it. Please, someone tell me the difference between trophies a kid can win playing some game like Soccer and Chess? Why is any game involving electronics automatically bad, while any game involving physical activity automatically good?

comment What do we do if our children don't like the nanny?
I'd love to do that, but it's worth noting that it doesn't work. I've offered to do this at professional daycares, and they insist that doing so changes the child's behaviour - they at least know that they're being observed, and my oldest son in particular just gloms onto me the moment I walk in the door (I come home for lunch frequently), so it's really difficult to observe anything about how they normally operate.

comment Why would a primary-schooler want to kill himself?
Why are you sugarcoating the reason for Dad's absence? It's far better if we actually know if the parents are going through the separation phase of a divorce or if he's in prison or on a business trip.

comment Is an expensive stroller worth it?
An even more important test is to put a good 30 lbs of weight into the stroller and then try to steer it with one hand. And then with 4 wheel strollers, consider multiplying that force by about 3 for less than smooth surfaces and later wear. Get the stroller that manoevers the easiest.

comment How can I potty train a 12 month old?
Upvoted because our attempts at early potty training not only failed miserably, but instilled a great deal of fear of the potty in our first son, making the task exponentially harder.

Oh yes, totally serious answer. I wish we'd done this with our first son, and we're currently doing it with our second. He loves running around naked, and with the state of the carpet (who the hell thought that carpet between the dining room and kitchen was a good idea?! Nevermind what the cat has done to it) we simply fail to care anymore - someday it will be replaced with hardwood. That said, early on in our first child's potty training (at 4!), we put him in underpants and moved him to a towel when he started peeing. That quickly taught him that there's an appropriate place for that.

comment How can I brush my toddlers' teeth when he won't let me?
Hehe. Yes, I'm sure that at some point in the past I've done the "Muahahaha! I'm going to get you!" game with our 4 year old. Now, he takes great pride in making all his teeth good and clean.

comment How do you teach young kids to defend themselves?
I guess I have high hopes for our oldest son when he gets into Kindergarten this fall. He was defending himself on the playground by the age of 3. His first reaction was always to hit back, then come crying to mommy and daddy. He has a tendency towards being overprotective of his little brother though.

comment At what age should a child be introduced to the Television?
Well, he used to play outside in the rain until he became cognisant of the fact that none of the other kids did - at around the age of 3. Somehow all the indoor games get used up well before our 6 months of rain do.

On a personal note, I learned a great deal about science and astronomy in particular from TV before I was 7, and these subjects continued to be fascinating to me long into adulthood. I like to believe that TV has had a positive influence on my life in spite of the huge mounds of crap that dominate its schedule.

You know what's crazy? My 4 year old son likes watching Extreme Engineering, How'd They Build That, and Mythbusters on Netflix. And that's aside from other educational age-appropriate stuff like Sesame Street. You'll never guess what he likes to do with his blocks and crazy fort "building materials". Now tell me that a child should never, ever watch TV.

And in my house when growing up, we learned that if there's nothing on but crap, the TV gets turned off. Learning moderation is also something you can learn, even if you have Cable.

This sounds like good advice, but I've already tried all this. It was part of the long discussion that led to the post, and the reason I know she's not mistreating him in any way.
