Oh I see. Definitely keep introducing new food. Children go through waves of like and dislike. Have him see other children eating a new food and say at a party, point it out. You can give him the power with choice as well by posing the question: "Do you want to try newFoodA or newFoodB?" and showing what they look like. Some kids don't like foods mixed together and prefer them separate so you can try a plate with dividers. My daughter will eat anything her dad eats even hot tortilla chips - I give her the plain chips but she did try the hot. Can try to see if he will mimic.

comment Do babies *have* to be weaned from breast milk or infant formula on purpose?
Great points but I disagree with your assumption that a baby does not know how to self-wean. Of course they do, that's why it's called "self-weaning". A baby can flat out refuse the breast or reduce their feedings. Many babies self-wean earlier if the mother gets pregnant and they dislike the taste of the new milk being made for the new baby. And I didn't understand "they won't be aware that they're not drawing food from milk" because breast milk does offer some nourishment still.

Glad he is making great progress with utensils! Remember that a toddler's (age 2) stomach is about the size of their 2 fists together so perhaps he is filling up on liquids first?

comment Do milk teeth indicate what permanent teeth will be like?
My husband had PERFECT milk teeth. His parents thought he wouldn't need braces. He needed and got braces in 6th grade.

comment Toddler: How to remove “over” attachment for Mom?
You mention that this is recent. Did something new happen (relocation, new baby)? If something major has happened, your son is looking for Mom as a reconnection to stability. In that case, it's just a phase if your son has a secure attachment. Have Mom spend extra cuddle time when she is around.

comment How to improve the introduction of solid food?
Some babies prefer to touch their food more than others. When my little one is avoiding being fed, I prepare for a "messy meal" - put the tarp underneath the high chair, remove some of the baby's clothes, etc. I let her mess up the food in her tray then sneak in the bites with the spoon.

You can try oatmeal. So long as it's a single grain it's okay these first few weeks of eating solids. Our first food was mashed up avocado. We did the Baby Led Weaning approach. We did a lot of real food and few jarred foods. At 8 months old she protested jarred food, not sure if you want that effect or not. She has been eating table food since.

Ditto, rice cereal is nasty tasting. After I tasted it, I never gave it to my daughter again. We switched to oatmeal for cereal which she loved.

comment How do I explain good sportsmanship to a 4 year old?
Agreed. I think if the game allows, add another adult in the game so there will be an adult loser to SHOW how to lose. Kids are impressionable. If they saw an adult being a sore loser, they may be mimicking that. You can correct it with model behavior.

comment Should I send my child to Kindergarten early?
@ReadyToLearn - I'm not trying to have a homeschool vs. school debate since the question already implies a school so the choice of setting is not relevant to the answer. You don't need research to support the word "challenge" as every day play and learning new tasks (how to use the toilet, use utensils, etc) are little challenges to babies/kids. Challenges to promote emotional growth you come across in social settings (such as in school/play-dates but not exclusively) are sharing, empathy, self control of your thoughts and actions, handling a bully, independence from the caregivers, etc.

comment When should a child stop using a pacifier, and how can I help with this transition?
@David - That's great, sounds like it was a success! :) I think it helps when kids are part of the process and the paci doesn't disappear into thin air. I would imagine that would be very stressful to have no control over their security object.
