We had many hours of training to be foster parents for a year, and were reimbursed our expenses by the county, so I jokingly say we were professional parents. We have witnessed the effects of very bad parenting first hand, and learned many different ways to reverse those effects, often with professional guidance. We've parented a wide gamut of children. Some of our foster children were of a different ethnicity than us. Our oldest daughter has cerebral palsy, we adopted our son, and our youngest was a surprise baby after thinking we couldn't have children without fertility treatments. After she was born our plate was too full to continue fostering, but we are grateful for the experience, and I hope to be able to pass on some of what we have learned on this site. In a few years when we have teens I expect you all to return the favor.

Interestingly, my kids ended up using "daddy" and "mommy" as pronouns for a while, to refer to any man or woman.

Empty nest doesn't necessarily happen as soon as your child leaves home. It's when you start noticing your influence wane. A lot of kids are still highly dependent on their parents for their first few years after leaving home, and it can take a while for the realization to sink in.

Specific medical issues are considered off topic because they're not related directly to parenting. I wouldn't get too worked up though. Unless he's had a major diet change in the last week or so, it's probably just run of the mill diarrhea. Kids that age often don't complain, and diarrhea often doesn't have concomitant symptoms.

This is a great answer, but the +1 is also for the spoiled tag you added in your edit :-)
