That's a good point, @Joe. I would probably word a response to that follow-up like, "Her brain works differently than most people's do, which makes her get worried about things you don't need to worry about."

Thanks for toning it down, so your good points don't get lost. +1 from me after your edits. I too know adults who took a very long time to get over the effects of having their feelings "protected" as a child. Candor in these sorts of cases is uncomfortable for adults, but critical for children. Tact is important too, but in my experience people tend to err too far in that direction. If you don't feel like you're being a little untactful in these situations, you're probably not being honest enough.
