Her father: (1) Read in the dark when there was no light and (2) made his own flashlight. At about the same age. :)

comment How can I deal with no-socks situation at night?
@AE - the feet ARE cold - both objectively (touching them) as well as subjectively (asking a child if they happen to wake up in this situation, e.g. to pee). Clearly NOT a power struggle since they don't mind putting the socks on in the evening, EVER (unless truly warm, and they do ask in those cases, and we agree with them most of the time to leave the socks off. The rules more or less are based on room temperature)

considering that their feet are usually cold to the touch on occasions we care about, the assumption in the second sentence also is likely wrong.

I wasn't asking WHETHER the kids should have the socks on, so this doesn't answer the question in any way, shape or form (and the tucked on last sentence repeats what previous answers said).

Did he watch/read any new media? News? Films? Books?

@DaveDev - 30+ year old with 2 kids of my own here. My parents still have no idea :) (though I largely replaced other distractions with StackExchange/PC/smartphone)

Sorry, -1. As professional developer, there's nothing worse that someone who thinks golfing is a positive thing; and as someone who taught programming, golfing is way beyond what a beginner should be exposed to.
