You'll probably never know who did the drive by down vote, unless they grow up and try to engage some adult conversation instead of just smacking your answer down. I just submitted an edit with a bit of format cleanup, thanks for offering up some good references.

links to said scientific findings would be an awesome addition to this answer, certainly worth a few +1 votes I'm sure you'll get in addition to mine. ;)

comment What is the best way to evaluate a daycare?
I highly recommend the show up un-announced part of that. Two of the prospective day care's we looked at got nixed from the list within 5 minutes of walking in the door un-announced. The one we're at doesn't even tell the staff when folks are coming in... the thought is to "always expect prospective parents to show up".

comment How do you ween a toddler off of breastfeeding?
Huge +1 to the snuggle time, that's how we made the transition. I forget how old our son was when he got cut off from the milk bar... though I still remember the shriek of pain from his momma. Teeth: natures way of saying "it's time to stop nursing now."

If a single sunning doesn't get them all the way before the diaper dries, simply re-wet it and put it back out for another sunning.

comment Are there any non-soy, non-dairy infant formulas?
@Lloydie In addition to the site David mentions (Natural Standard) that actually wrote that pamphlet Mayo is re-distributing, just switch to the "Selected References" tab of the document and you'll get the list of 15 journaled papers they're working from. (well, they say "selected", so odds are there were more than 15, but they cut out some of the ones they relied upon the least to get it to fit in the print copy.

comment Is baby talk helpful or detrimental?
I'd +2 this if I could. This mirrors exactly what we've heard from a handfull of doctors and speech pathologists. It's beneficial up to a point, then it becomes a detriment. (So technically, BOTH of the answers Orbit asks about are correct... they're incomplete in that they don't address the "when" part of the equation, which is where the confusion comes in.)

somehow I think "then get out of the car, we're staying here at the mall." right after a session in the play place just wouldn't quite have the same impact. :) That's an interesting question about the faux no. The wife has a habit of doing that with other things... I put an awesome meal on the table and ask how it tastes and get "meh." with a grin about 30 seconds later as she's plowing through the plate. I need to think and observe if we're doing that. In either case it's a great thought.

His receptive language is up to the task... I'm just going to ask "Why?" and stop and wait for an answer. :)

I like your technique, but I fear it requires a bit more expressive language than he has available to him. That said, I'm gunna try it next time... who knows, he could surprise me. :) Normally I try to tell him why I asked him to do something, which doesn't get anywhere, as his responses have devolved from the old pattern of "oooh, ok." into this.
