No BM control; what does this mean for training? @balancedmama: Thanks! She'll sometimes she'll say something like "I want to be changed!". (Once or twice it's been "I don't want to be changed!") But often, nothing at all (at her daycare, she often doesn't tell when she poops). She doesn't squat or do much of anything different when she poos; I can hardly ever tell "during", only after. (OTOH, she will often give advance warnings of her own volition. They're just... not very precise... or maybe she warns because she feels, then doesn't make on the potty, then makes when she's more comfortable.) |

Do I need to space big changes? How much? Sounds reasonable. How far in advance can a 2-year-old look forward to? Should I be telling her now about something happening in two weeks? In a month? I don't want to confuse or frustrate her. |

How do you handle bilingual education in a country where you do not speak the language natively? @AdamMosheh: The comment system really isn't intended to be used as a personal-messaging mechanism... Thanks for thinking of me, but let's not derail bilingual education into Jewish SE proposals. Could you please delete your comments now? You can ping me in the Mi Yodeya chat if you'd like. Thanks :) |

Handling a toddler at a hotel/hostel @TorbenGundtofte-Bruun: Perform, no, but when she latches on to a song she's overjoyed to complete the last word of every line... And that's performance enough to keep everybody cooing :D |

Handling a toddler at a hotel/hostel Wow! Great to have such on-target advice. I appreciate this muchly. I particularly like the idea of turning "playing with my daughter" into a family event (not "my responsibility" or "foist this responsibility on family member X"). BTW, it's Passover's second holiday+Shabbat. Fun-fun-fun! |

Handling a toddler at a hotel/hostel As for self-imposed restrictions... the two restrictions that bother me most is "being near sleeping baby == being in same room as sleeping baby" and "public dining room is a bad place for a toddler to run around". I don't think those two are self-imposed. |

Handling a toddler at a hotel/hostel Yeah, definitely stressed out :/ I'm willing to have others babysit for limited periods of time, I'm... less comfortable with coming on the assumption that babysitting is a job to be distributed across the whole vacation and the whole family. But that feels surmountable. |

Handling a toddler at a hotel/hostel It's a bit smaller than that... say a dozen people. One other kid, a one-year-old. I can definitely enlist others in the family for babysitting duty, and have her babysat round-robin throughout. That'd definitely help the meals; I might even be able to find volunteers for the naptimes...I'm basically wondering if this isn't too much of a hassle, for me and everybody else. But this is definitely a good way to lighten the load. |

Handling a toddler at a hotel/hostel Thanks for this! Quick question responses - (A) At home this is not necessary - because my daughter is in a separate room. She doesn't wake up at minor disturbances, but she won't sleep if adults are active around her. (B) Neat idea! Problematic for me on the holiday - and I don't know that I'm comfortable leaving a toddler in a locked room with only a monitor. But... intriguing. (C) Many religious rules are meant to make your life needlessly harder! I love 'em anyway. |

At what age is it appropriate to bring my children to an (Italian) opera? Do Gilbert and Sullivan operettas count? I got into those very heavily, but not until I was in my late teens. Don't think I'd have appreciated it as much earlier. (OTOH, my little sister has been following my enthusiasm since she was 8...) |

How can I encourage my baby's first words while keeping up a bilingual distinction? My daughter's still on her very, very first words, so trying to encourage her to say a second word when she's barely saying the first is probably not going to happen quite yet :) But I really like what you've said here - just mixing the encouragement and "yay!"-ness with the language distinction. Thanks :) |
