I am a parent of two boys who are 5 years apart, they get along well and play as well as kids can with that age gap. They are half-Chinese and are growing up learning English and Chinese, reading, writing and speaking for both languages. What I want to get out of this site are more ideas on raising my boys, giving them more opportunities for learning and growth as well as more ideas on how to educate them and get them to try new things.

comment At what development stage is an infant ready for a ride in a bike trailer?
I'm curious what there is on this, we have a bike trailer that I am thinking of using with out 14 month old, but just haven't had a nice weekend lately to hook it up. I'm also curious on if you get a helmet on your infant, our youngest doesn't like hats, even on others and takes them off when he can.

comment When should we allow children to experience spices in food?
Agreed with the baby food flavor, even in the US much of it is bland but I have no idea why. Our toddler seems to respond to food that is more flavorful, since we've given him table food he's eaten more than he ever did the prepared stuff.

comment When to allow children to consume sugar/candy/sweets/junk?
Best way to look at it for moderation is just like you are doing, by keeping it limited and showing moderation. It's how we raised our kids, and the oldest doesn't mind candy once in awhile but doesn't show much interest in it. "Fruit - nature's candy" as he has picked up from me is the way to go. Also offer alternatives if the kids ask, they'll pick it up.

I wouldn't consider sugar a junk food, all things in moderation, but I think I understand better what you are looking for now. Although I'd disagree that avoiding sugar is really a necessity, I let my son eat homemade chocolate chip cookies when he was younger and there is a whole lot of sugar in there. I stuck more with moderation, but I'm curious as to what others come up with on sugar avoidance and necessity. interesting question.

Agreed, this is what I have done...

I guess it depends on your goal, I did this for the first couple years with my son more from a personal health standpoint. I realized how much bad stuff I was eating so I stopped to set a good example, eventually we let him have things like cookies and some candy. He never developed a taste for candy though, it's rare he finishes a candy bar or something like that he is given. Are you doing this just to avoid sugar as some bad thing or is there another rationale?

comment How can I help my kids to sleep comfortably (and safely) on an overnight drive?
Kids fall asleep in the weirdest positions if they are tired enough, I know I did when I was young. I wouldn't worry about it and with some neck pillows you should be fine. I'd worry more about ME staying up all night driving, that's more scary to me than the kids. Still I think you'd be fine with the car seats, or when we do long drive trips we just make stops now and again to le the kids stretch their legs.

comment How can we improve a trilingual toddler's basic language development?
Agreed, my bilingual son is 14 months and barely shows any interest in talking, but ask him to do something in either language and he gets it. I'd say give it time, my oldest was almost a two before he really started talking in either language.

comment Do I need infant cloth diaper covers with a cut-out for the umbilical cord?
Agreed, we never had trouble with either of our sons and we use disposables for both.

comment Why would a primary-schooler want to kill himself?
+1 agreed, unless you spend time and he opens up you will not get an idea what is going on by guessing.

comment How do you stop a child from using bad language and profanity?
Personally I still worry about "soap blindness" but that's me. i never thought of the soap punishment as worthy, since most soaps today have stuff in there I can't pronounce. Nice answer though - +1

Yes, my point on the Zhu Zhu Pet's, they get annoying when they keep running around for minutes. Good point though!
