I am a parent of two boys who are 5 years apart, they get along well and play as well as kids can with that age gap. They are half-Chinese and are growing up learning English and Chinese, reading, writing and speaking for both languages. What I want to get out of this site are more ideas on raising my boys, giving them more opportunities for learning and growth as well as more ideas on how to educate them and get them to try new things.

comment What to do when toddler keeps using the potty to stay awake at bedtime?
It's what we've done successfully with our son, they all try it and you just have to put a stop on it at some point so they know you will not always respond.

comment How should I deal with my toddler's difficult behavior towards food?
+1 for the non-conventional serving platters, never tried that but it sounds novel enough to get interest since kids love new things.

comment When is the best time in a child's development to move to a different area?
I'd concur, we moved alot when I was younger due to family circumstances and I ended up going to 10 different schools in 12 years of schooling. I got used to not having long term friends by the time of middle school as we'd end up moving to a new location or town; this was easier when we stayed in one place for awhile as the neighbors were constant. The older you go, and more you move, the more difficult it becomes to maintain friendships, but with the internet these days that might be easier.

comment Should imaginary friends be accepted or discouraged?
I'd see nothing wrong with it so long as it's kept under control. I also agree with the causative argument, it's hard as 3rd persons without detailed knowledge to know, although as a parent I would not be wasting food for an imaginary friend. A setting, along the lines of Elijah at a Seder, would be fine for me but at some point I'd start noting the differences between real friends and imaginary if my child was not making the difference.

comment Is starting a small fire a good way to the explain dangers of flammability?
I don't trust anything really dangerous to plastic locks, just stuff I want to keep away from being used without my permission - or snacks.

comment Is it normal for a toddler belly to last into the pre-school years?
I used to worry the same thing for my son, because he had a tongue tie and was taller than average (which made buying clothes tough with long arms). She might not be the only one in Kindergarten like this either, so it's not like she'd be singled out. All kids are different and some things we can't do anything about as parents. Most kids in my sons class had other things to worry about than teasing other kids anyway...maybe your daughters class will be the same.

Are you asking because you are concerned? She is concerned? Or just curious? Unless its an issue I wouldn't worry about it if your doctor hasn't said its a problem, all kids are different.

comment What television shows could I show my toddlers to encourage multilingual learning?
I'd agree, my sons do well with Mandarin because they watch Mandarin TV shows, read books and Mom SPEAKS to them in Mandarin. My 15 month old understands both English and Mandarin when asked questions but is not speaking yet, for him unless there was interaction I would not imagine him getting much use out of just hearing phrases repeated.

comment When should I stop swaddling my baby?
No matter what we tried with our boys they always found a way to get an arm or two out when going to sleep. Kids are little escape artists, its just something you get used to.

comment Is it okay for both parents to be asleep at the same time?
All these are great answers...I'm going to be voting lots! I had the same thoughts initially then thought "we all survived this before, why is this any different?"

comment What should we teach our children about violent attacks like the ones in Norway on 7/22/11?
I would still answer #1 the same way I answered parenting.stackexchange.com/questions/1457/… - you know what your kids can handle so answer accordingly.

Agreed 3 is off topic, although #1 seems like the World War 2 question to me - parenting.stackexchange.com/questions/1457/…. #2 I'm not sure about, that is tricky since it's probably not instructive to drill your kids for such things. Trying to tell them to be safe is one thing, teaching them to be like Alyssa Milano in "Commando" is another.

comment Can I figure out what my baby wants by the sound it makes when it cries?
I agree with afrazier, both my sons cried in different ways depending on whether they were hungry, tired or needed a diaper change. Eventually you figure out what they are, and by the time you do they are onto something else. Childhood is a rapidly evolving experience for everyone involved.

comment How can we make a long road trip pleasant for a toddler and the parents?
Pretty much sums up my experience, although I did a trip from Massachusetts to South Carolina, we drove during the day and it was ok. I don't like overnight driving since no matter how much you feel awake, or how much coffee you have, if you are driving by yourself in the middle of the night you can still get tired from the tunnel vision you get from headlights and darkness.

Wow...we had bilirubin problems with both kids but all we got was UV treatment we never got told to change any feedings.
