To support my research on ecosystem functioning, my collaborators and I are developing PEcAn, a model-data synthesis framework (www.pecanproject.org) and BETYdb, its underlying database (www.betydb.org).

comment How can I potty train a 12 month old?
@Lennart I can understand your confusion, but the difference is that you don't discourage them from pooping and peeing in their pants, you just give them the opportunity to do it in the potty. Similarly, you don't really 'train' a baby to eat or sleep, you just provide them with the opportunity to do so.

comment What to buy to prepare for the arrival of a new baby?
+1 I think 'buy it when you need it' is the best advice we got. Not only can you spread out the costs, but it gives you more time to find deals, hand-me-downs, etc.

@Just it sounds like a lot of work, but changing poopy diapers is both hard and stinky. It really doesn't have to be any harder than, when you see your kid squeezing on a poop, take off the diaper and let it drop in the toilet. Or when changing a diaper, put them on the toilet before putting the new one on. It is not required to respond 24/7, or any more than you have time for. I mostly focused on catching poop, but by 18 mo, it was possible to catch most of the pee too. (the toilet does the actual catching).

It might not be a good idea to aggressively train too early: according to pediatrician Dr. Brazelton "trying to toilet train before (a child is ready) could be coercive and therefore psychologically damaging", but see my answer for a Brazelton approved method.

comment How do you decide if a movie is suitable for young children?
@Shpigford I wouldn't ask "did your child get scared", I would expect my friend to let me if I should be concerned. Watching the movie beforehand isn't actually foolproof - children can be scared by unexpected things. I am not convinced that pre-viewing movies is the best way to spend the limited time that I have for my children, when the bulk of the work has already been done by other parents. I think that the information available at a site like www.commonsensemedia.org is pretty solid.

comment Does using sign language really accelerate a child's ability to speak?
do you mean that it helps them speak earlier than they would earlier, or that it helps them to communicate earlier by using sign language than by speaking? There is no doubt that children can communicate earlier with their hands than with spoken words.

@Shpigford watching the movie beforehand is a foolproof, but time consuming approach. Why not do background research? Talk to friends?
