comment When should a child stop using a pacifier, and how can I help with this transition?
@BBM I agree on the talking part. I've seen children who still use a pacifer and can't speak very well when compared to children of the same age who don't. It's only anecdotal evidence, but it makes sense that something in the mouth prevents practicing talking.

What country are you in? We (Americans) stopped all our kids at around 12 months. Living in Italy (Napoli), we saw kids around Age 5 to 6 still using them. Could be cultural, but I think 12 months is about right.

comment Is a Do-It-Yourself baby monitor a bad idea?
DIY or wireless webcams could perhaps be a better idea because (I'm assuming) you'd be able to use SSL or other encryption to encrypt the signal, thus deterring any prying eyes. Not sure if commercial babycams have encryption or not.

comment Is putting a 9-year-old to bed early abusive?
I never looked at it like that. I just assumed she was highly opinionated and overeacted to something she didn't agree with. There must be a precedent in her life for such an accusation. I went to bed around 7pm until I was in 5th Grade (and still do sometimes). In fact, my parents would make me stay up later to keep me from going to bed eariler. In my opinion, that's more "abusive" than vice versa.

I thought I saw an earlier reply that mentioned that I should have taken the opportunity to discuss the teacher's concerns rather than invite her to call CPS. Just for clarification, that was the culmination of a conversation that was going nowhere. The teacher, rather than address this privately with my wife, chose to chastise her in front of the other parents by saying "I think something is seriously wrong with putting your child to be that early" when my wife said she was unable to attend a meeting. I asked the teacher why it was any of her business, and that's when she implied abuse.

I understand that this may be subjective, but I was looking at what could possibly lead someone to such a conclusion (e.g., case studies where abuse has been proven). I can't understand how someone could draw such a conclusion, other than their own interpretation and grossly inappropriate assumptions.
