comment When should kids be allowed to walk/bike to school alone?
Upvote for making a point of the odds. I can't speak for the whole world, but most places are far safer now than they were 20 years ago, and I bet most of us enjoyed a lot more independence in those days than many kids get these days.

comment What is a good strategy for getting our 5 year old to finish dinner before expecting dessert?
Bingo. Dessert for my kid is the same as dessert for me - a special occasion item. And in those special occasions, you can afford to be more lax - as long as they make a reasonable attempt to eat some food, they get a bit of birthday cake - for instance. You let them get enjoyment out of treats while encouraging generally healthier eating.

Good list. I especially like the role reversal idea from the public transit question.

revised Is my 7-year-old child sleeping too much?
Made the age more clear in the subject.

comment When can I cover my baby with a blanket in her crib?
Very true that they wake in a panic occasionally anyway. All the more reason to fix avoidable causes. :) @BrianH - I hope I didn't imply you weren't concerned with safety - just meant there may be more to it. I agree that if entanglement isn't a problem for your child, a light blanket should be safe at a year of age.

comment When should I transition a 2 year old toddler from the cot to a bed?
We were considering switching because our boy was getting to the point where he touched both ends of the crib when he stretched. While we were still thinking about it, he hit his head scaling the side of the crib one morning. Time to upgrade.

This is a great point, but the questioner may be concerned with more than safety. The concern that we had with our little guy was more of the nuisance factor. For awhile he refused to be covered, and would work hard in his sleep to get out of blankets. This usually resulted in him getting tangled to the point that he would wake in a panic.

Suggested edit to make the age more clear - I read twice and almost commented that the age would be helpful in answering the question. Maybe my eyes weren't working too well, but I think it would be clearer in the subject line.

Those look like fancy versions of the type of outfits we discovered a bit late in the game for our child, who was getting out of swaddling before he could even produce any (other) sort of coordinated movement. We jokingly called them baby bags, and I wish we'd discovered them much earlier. Here's another example - amazon.com/Summer-Infant-Slumbersack-Longsleeve-Microfleece/dp/…

True, and I should break out the "perks" consideration into the list at the end to make it more clear. Thanks.

comment What can be done to help bright children stuck in a boring school?
I'll add the upvote for @torbengb. I still believe there is something to be said for some alternative teaching methods for gifted children, but the answer given above is very practical and realistic advice for handling this challenge.

comment Should adults pay rent if they live in their parents' home?
I really like that second idea, and I'd hope anyone who had the financial freedom (and none of the other extenuating circumstances you suggest) to do so would consider that technique. Even if the adult child was studying, etc it may be worth asking a monthly "payment" properly proportional to their income to set aside in aid of becoming independent later. Just to help establish some financial responsibility while they are leaning on family for support.
