comment How do parents have sex when there's a toddler in the house?
@PikkuKatja: Uhm, I think at about two and a half years of age. Maybe a bit earlier. But if the toddler really wants something from you (like said in my answer), then you have to give him something for distraction (book, etc.) or have a little break and attend him/her. But if he/she is only watching you, it is enough to show a smile and then don’t care. Mostly he/she wont be interested more than some seconds. But sometimes he/she may want to be loved, too. That means: Wants to be hugged, wants to be kissed. He/she will notice that you love each other, it is something very natural :-).

“may want to try to copy the behaviour”? Children don’t just copy everything. They somehow understand, that “it” is something private you are doing. At least if you talk to her/him and say, that you want to be left alone/not be disturbed for some minutes. You can explain her/him, that you are doing love. Explaining is always good.

@Dave Clarke: What things do you mean? Their parents having sex? And then?

This is of course the easiest solution. But you should consider my answer as well if you don’t always want to wait until the toddler is asleep.

comment How do you respond when a child catches his parents having sex?
Well, I don’t think that having sex is something that should disturb or harm a child or anybody else. It is common like eating or going to the toilet. While eating in most cultures is a shared event, going to the toilet and having sex is – in some cultures – something private (reason: you are concentrated and don’t want to be distracted). But one should be able to talk about it. And should do it, not wait and sit it out. The longer you wait the more difficult it will be to talk about it – for both sides.

comment Why does my toddler cry when he's put to bed?
Leaving somebody crying is a way of teaching him to give up hope. And in blank despair he will do so. Can’t you understand, that most people (adults and children) don’t want to fall asleep alone? Especially when you are still baby (2 years old). If he learns/sees that he is not alone, he will soon fall asleep faster.

What bed time routine do you have? Do you read a book for him? Or tell a story or sing something and stay after that some time with him, so that he can feel save and cosy? Not only adults want to cuddle. Who wants to sleep alone if he has a partner? The same is true for a child.
