comment Getting a 5-year-old up and going in the morning
My dad would come into our rooms singing the Boy Scout song, "Rise and shine and Give God Your Glory, Glory" at the top of his lungs. My brother eventually would set his alarm 10 minutes early, get up and go find a hiding place (say, a closet in the guest room) and would go to sleep there. :-)

comment How can I potty train my 4 year old daughter?
This worked really well for our daughter. So much, in fact, that she would purposefully control her bathroom productions. Just pee a little to get a sticker and then pee a little again 10 minutes later to get another sticker, etc., repeat for a couple of hours. Ditto for #2s. Just a little bit now, a little more a little later. We had to make it so that she only got a sticker on sufficient eliminations, but it did convince us that she had fine control of her bladder/bowels.

comment At what age should a child be introduced to the Television?
@Ernie: I'm not saying television has no place, just that ideally it has no place. Yes, your son enjoys the Extreme Engineering shows, but wouldn't the ideal way to learn and be engaged is to see it in person, talk to a real engineer, build some models, etc.? And as for your childhood, wouldn't the ideal way have been to talk to a real astronomer, look through a telescope, and so forth?

comment Is it reasonable for parents with small children to use the disabled toilet?
@Ian: I Googled "Radar key" and read that they are only used the "keep the toilets locked to stop misuse and damage." I'm curious, does an able bodied person using the disabled toilet quickly and courteously when the able bodied toilets are occupied constitute misuse? Or does that term carry a more egregious connotation?

comment How should I respond to a child asking to have as much spending money as her friends do?
Perfect. It let's the kid know (a) that you're listening and understanding their concerns; (b) sends the message, "If you have a problem you need to hunt for a solution," and (c) imparts the important message that in life work and effort is required if you want to enjoy material/monetary gain.
