comment Should my 3 daughters share 2 rooms?
I agree. I would give the two daughters that live at home their own room and use the third as a guest bedroom, which the 20 year old can use when she is visiting. And if there are other guests, the two younger ones can share a room while the guests are there.

comment How can I get my primary-schooler to remember to turn off the light?
"Now I make him go do it whenever I see them on even if that means he has to go up the stairs or stop doing whatever he's doing." Um, why are you just now doing this?

comment How do you tell your child they are terrible at something?
I like this idea. I might not even need to compare her to anyone. If I just start keeping track of a few simple things like "% of passes completed" and "% of shots that were accurate" and review after every game, she's the kind of kid that would want to see those numbers getting better.

comment Should we circumcise our son?
FWIW, I am circumcised and had my son circumcised as well, mainly out of a sense of tradition and a fear of answering the "why am I not like Daddy" questions. There may have also been an element of "If my father had it done on me, and I don't have it done on my son, I'm calling my father a bad father." In retrospect, I wish I had not circumcised my son. There's not really any GREAT reason to do it, and when in doubt, go with not cutting off part of your (or your son's) body

comment What age is it appropriate to start martial arts?
While I agree with pretty much everything you said, my son, who is about to turn 8, started Karate at the age of 6. His sensei is Japanese and is pretty traditional in his teaching methods. He does not do a whole lot of "kiddie games" and my son loves him.

comment How do you tell your child they are terrible at something?
I think the problem is that when she started, she really was better than most of the kids. However, she took a year and a half off to do other stuff, and thinks she is still better than everyone.

comment What should children call a step-grandparent?
Personally, I think you AND your mom should stay out of it. If the kids are happy with "Mr Joe" and he is happy with it, then there should be no issue. If they want to call him "Grandpa" or some variant and he is happy with it, again there should be no issue.

comment What are some hacks and gadgets for a soon-to-be dad?
Yeah, that's the trend now. Then again, if you still have your cordless, that feature will work even if you don't have your phone line turned on

comment Is it important to encourage children to experience historic events?
The amount of significance you give something should reflect your values. Watching a wedding of two people I have never and will never meet just because they are famous for no other reason than one of them being the child of a famous person (who himself is only famous for the same reason) in no way reflects my values, so I would not encourage my kids to watch it.
