The problem with letting friends heavily weight the choice, is that it is likely that well intentioned friends can give really bad advice. Aspergers is a tricky condition, the symptoms often mask as laziness and lack of confidence. Friends will often give advice that is quite applicable for a neurotypical chaild, but is inconsistaint with someone on the autism spectrum.

-1 Kids with aspergers do not always present as shy. My daughter is anything but shy, yet still does not understand social conventions and can't read body language. At seven she ran around hugging everything and everyone, much to the dismay of fellow students. Aspergers is more than just a "label", there are strengths and limitations that need special attention.

comment At what age is autism typically diagnosed?
+1 Autism is a spectrum disorder. There are most likely many people well into adulthood that haven't been diagnosed. My daughter has aspergers and wasn't diagnosed until she was 12. A lot of symptoms present as normal adolescent awkwardness.

comment Is there any scientific evidence in favor of co-sleeping with children?
I lost a 4 month old grandson because his mother rolled over in her sleep with the baby in the bed. The death was ruled accidental asphyxiation. Be very careful about sleeping with very young children. You don't want to go through the aftermath.

comment Is it cruel to deny laughing gas for a teen getting a tooth filled?
"I'd like for her to learn the consequences of inadequate hygiene." Allowing a child to feel pain when not necessary does not teach the consequences of prior actions, it teaches that going to the dentist hurts, it teaches avoidance of health professionals. Is that really the lesson you want her to learn, avoid doctors?

@Lennart Yes, it is on the the Autism spectrum. My daughter has it, and her neurophysiologist has diagnosed it as such. High functioning autism (HFA), and aspergers are very similar, with the difference being that in HFA language development is delayed. Reference the blog I posted in my answer below. The author is much more succinct than I am.
