How do you teach a child to receive gifts graciously? Oooh - good one. Sometimes my kids have just gone "Oh, I didn't want this" in front of a well meaning grandparent - for which they are chastised for being rude and told to apologise. I don't know of any way to teach them in advance - you always tell your kids to be polite, but when they are young they just come out with whatever is in their head at the time. |

What credentials are available to identify a babysitter as trustworthy? Definitely - references. And here in the UK you could require them to apply for a 'Disclosure' check - basically background and criminal check. |

Can you guide a toddler to learn specific words? :-) It's certainly not a 'do this and they will say it' by any means, but there was strong positive influence over what they learned first, in our case anyway. |

Can learning sign language be harmful for babies' speech development? sorry - I don't know any studies, however, from anecdotal evidence: we used sign language training with our first. He learned to speak really quickly so we kind of gave up on signing with our second child at about 1 year. We never signed at all with our third and she took ages to learn to speak (but we think it is because she managed to communicate her needs to her siblings really well and they brought her anything she needed - so her motivation was probably lower) - admittedly she is now the chattiest...in conclusion: it doesn't appear to have any obvious cause/effect in our family:-) |

How can we keep my niece's hair out of her eyes? I guess there is a possibility of showing her how to rub across her forehead instead? With all of mine I just let their hair grow until it was long enough to put in a scrunchie or clips - there was definitely a phase when it was around the eyes, then another when it was always in their mouths, and a further one where it ended up in their food if they forgot to tie it all back. |

How old is old enough for a child to have their ears pierced? Actually, on things like haircuts and other non-invasive changes, when my kids wanted mohawks (at age 8 for my eldest, I think) we went and cut it then and there. My thinking is that as they have tried it they may be less keen to do it later when it may have a bigger impact on getting a job etc... |

When is it too old to go Trick or Treating? Round our way it's songs, tricks, poetry, light shows and even stunts - they earn their treats from ages 2 to 16 or so :-) +1 for this answer by the way - excellent way to look at it. |
