comment How can you deal with tantrums without spanking?
How bizarre. What I learned from punishment when I did things wrong was to not do them. That simple. It didn't provoke self doubt or an urge to be sneaky. If anything I became more own and honest. Anyway this would probably be of more value in Parenting Chat rather than here.

Well - I use all those tools and punishment of varying degrees with my older kids, and thus far they have turned out to do the right thing more than any of their peers, so I'm pretty happy we have got it right thus far. Teenage years coming up though, so who knows :-)

I'm afraid I disagree there @Christine - at 10 they are aware enough to know that the punishment is because of what they did, and how to improve their behaviour to avoid that punishment in future. Discipline is definitely not bullying.

comment How do you teach morals and values in non-religious households?
@balanced - totally agree. My answer was about why households teach good ethical lessons. The end result of good ethical lessons should be happiness and kindness, I would just rather see it come from the individual rather than from some outside influence.

When you give him options, and he doesn't answer, what do you do? This is possibly the most impact piece - your behaviour as a parent is key.

This is why scented nappy/diaper sacks are popular

comment How to encourage toddler to not throw food?
At that age they do not have internal motivation @Carmi - you need to first encourage the behaviour, then as they get older reward self-motivation.
