This is what we did with ours. Minimal interaction so there is no reward for getting out of bed.

comment How do you discipline someone else's child?
@BBM - Possibly, but a nanny has been given authority by the child's parents to care for and discipline that child. I would avoid overstepping boundaries without explicit authorisation from the parents otherwise you can get in weird situations. Even asking of that authorisation may be considered a slap in the face for the parents. We lost a long term friend last year when she decided to interject herself into a school yard disagreement between my 9yo and her friend. Dealing with others' offspring is fraught with danger.

comment How can I make learning English fun for a 14 year old?
Sorry, I was referring to novels. You could start looking at "Captain Underpants" or "The Hardy Boys" to work out what level she is at. Amazon often lets you read the first few pages of a book online so you can gauge its appropriateness. My 9yo is an avid reader, so for her there is nothing more fun that a new book.

@Ilari - My daughter has been classified as "gifted" by some of her previous teachers and has attended special classes for advanced students where she has held her own. That being said, her strengths are on the language side of things. I do not know how much that applies to the maths side - her skills are above average but nowhere near as good as her reading/spelling. Having just spent an hour with her doing maths homework, I think we need to take a step back and work more on the fundamentals.

comment What do we do if our children don't like the nanny?
It was easier for us since we work from home so our child (and nanny) was used to us floating in the background. Even then, there is a "Heisenberg" aspect that needs to be taking into account. This is the same as childcare, though. You drop the kid off and they sook. The second you're not there, they perk up and play. In your mind, they are desperately unhappy all day.
