When do kids start learning fractions in school? @Ilari - My daughter has been classified as "gifted" by some of her previous teachers and has attended special classes for advanced students where she has held her own. That being said, her strengths are on the language side of things. I do not know how much that applies to the maths side - her skills are above average but nowhere near as good as her reading/spelling. Having just spent an hour with her doing maths homework, I think we need to take a step back and work more on the fundamentals. |

What do we do if our children don't like the nanny? It was easier for us since we work from home so our child (and nanny) was used to us floating in the background. Even then, there is a "Heisenberg" aspect that needs to be taking into account. This is the same as childcare, though. You drop the kid off and they sook. The second you're not there, they perk up and play. In your mind, they are desperately unhappy all day. |

When do kids start learning fractions in school? The teacher's comments were along the lines of "she does not need to know that yet. She is already above average - don't worry about it." I have had a close relationship with the past 4 teachers. Each one has recognised my child's abilities (especially in language) and deficits (overly emotional). This one - not so much. I would be happy to let my daughter advance at her own pace but I get the feeling that she wont advance anywhere until the rest of the class catches up. That being said, I will keep an open mind with the teacher. Thanks. |

Why would a primary-schooler want to kill himself? @HedgeMage - fair point. It is hard to summarise 9 years of parenting in a paragraph. Teaching life skills to a child is something that starts from day one and is built up over years. My daughter does not suffer depression but certainly has the emotions turned up to 11. |

Why would a primary-schooler want to kill himself? My 9yo girl (also very clever) has never mentioned anything like suicide in any context. It is an alien concept to her. From my sample space of one, I would not consider this typical or desirable. That being said, I have little idea what you can do about it other than to be the best role model you can be. Perhaps it is worth talking to him about how no problem is insurmountable and that when you have issues you just have to push through them rather than giving up... tough one. |

When do kids start learning fractions in school? The teacher gives "feeler" tests to see who knows what. It seems she sees her job as lifting those below average up and has little interest with those on the top end of the bell curve. Thanks for your experience, I shall persevere. |

Is the Rosetta software a good tool for teaching a toddler foreign languages? I'd totally agree with the answer. I have two children being raised bilingual. We were slack with the first one (9yo) and fell back to english too quickly but she has being going to language classes for 3 years now. Our second (3 yo) is completely immersed in the second language. The 3yo has already caught up with the 9yo. Exposure is everything. |

How do you address hoarding behavior in a primary-schooler? Fair point, our concerns are not the hoarding as this has not become a major issue - it is why she feels the need. She generally says it is so that she can remember the day. We went to a wildlife sanctuary recently (took lots of photos) then had an ice cream on the way out. She wanted to keep the wrapper for the ice-cream to "remember the day". We negotiated down to taking a photo with her and the wrapper. So far, we have been attacking this by trying to be more emotionally supporting of her and doing more special activities with her. |
