What are the (dis)advantages of putting a child in a nursery or pre-school even when one parent is at home? Shouldn't this be a comment to Hedgemadge's post? |

Can a baby have an allergic reaction in utero? @vignesh - The point of my post was that there is not much of a scientific consensus on allergies and new things are being still discovered. At the point of time, I would be hesitant to put to much stock in anyone claiming to speak for the scientific community. |

Typical frequency of discplinary issues for a kindergartener? As a matter of interest, have you looked at his diet? We had to sugar restrict our daughter at a similar age due to its effects on her behaviour. |

Will treats after a fall promote self-inflicted injuries? We did this with our daughter. If she fell, we'd just say "dust off and keep going." Worked well until we worked out she thought that she should never cry, even when she fractured her arm. Later she face planted on bitumen surface, badly scratching her face but still did not allow herself to cry for half and hour. After that, we had to balance things out a bit. |

Are prenatal ultrasounds safe? Cool. Be wary of the wisdom on the masses though. Google "vaccinations cause autism" to get an idea of its value. |

Are prenatal ultrasounds safe? Your best bet would be to post this on the skeptics web site. There, you will get reasoned and cited discussion of the claim. Here, you are likely to just get parents' opinions. |

What are some tips for making an international flight with a toddler? @Dave Clarke - All drugs have side-effects (panadol also makes my son hyper), that kinda the point of drugs. Whether something is an effect or side-effect depends entirely upon intent. A parent has to balance risk verses benefit for every medication they offer. Obviously, we spoke to our GP first so I feel our decision was reasonable. jon_darkstar seemed happy to offer valium, not something I'd be happy with. Each to their own. |

What are some tips for making an international flight with a toddler? @Dave Clarke - You are aware that Phenergan is an antihistamine, not crack? It has been certified for use with children and babies. I have no problem giving a child's dosage of a child's medication to a child if it helps the child sleep - something that children need. Guess what, I also give my children baby panadol when they have a temperature! |

I don't like my child's teacher's teaching style @balanced mama - few teachers are trained in dealing with kids in the extreme upper and lower parts of the bell curve. If a kid is in the top 1% then the teacher is likely to deal a with child like that once every 4 years. In the case of our child, she is in the top .1% for reading so most teachers will never deal with a child like that. On the other hand, we deal with her every day and have a good grasp of her strengths and weaknesses. She can get a A while slacking off, an issue we are dealing with (in conjunction with her teacher) at the moment. |

Is my pediatrician missing something about my 3 month old's gas pain? A friend's baby had horrible colic and would scream for hours. Though a process of elimination, they worked out that if the mother had pine-nuts then the child would be up all night screaming. Note the child, now a teenager, was not allergic to pine-nuts. Sometimes it does not take much to set them off. |
