I am a former classroom teacher that has had experience in the preschool, elementary and highschool settings but mostly taught in middle school in the United States. My favorite teaching years were the three I spent teaching science in a specialized setting for twice-exceptional kids in Middle School Science and Highschool biology. I am now a home educator for my 7-year-old daughter and nanny part time. I have a book I am working on publishing and a children's book.

comment What are some outdoor activities that a toddler can be engaged in while I'm working outside in the garden/yard?
Additionally, I actually taught mine how to tell which plants were weeds, gave her a weeding fork and put her to work. She also collected pebbles and rocks in a bucket for me so they wouldn't be in the "wrong places" anymore. She helped with rocks at two and with weeding by "finding weeds" at three and actually pulling them around four.

This is what my hygienist recommends for infants (minus the flossing). Can you provide any elaboration on how this is more helpful than just using a brush along with the many ideas already offered?

Actually, it is very common in a number of social and behavioral disabilities, that kids will "hold it together" in public spaces and times and then wear themselves out and "totally lose it" when they get home and feel safe to "lose it." I'd be willing to guess this is a normal way to cope for a lot of people. Think about how some people grieve - they hold it together until alone and everyone thinks all is fine and well and remarks about it, but the household is a mess. That is not part of the definition of ADD by the way.

comment How do we handle one parent frequently being out-of-town for weeks at a time?
Great Answer! Just tacking on this additional idea. I know I'm late, but as it seems this was going to be an on-going situation, I hope I am in time for this to be helpful. As the boys get old enough, your husband might leave them little notes (in pictures at first) for them to find throughout his absence. They could be tucked in a sock, at the bottom of the toy box, inside the case of a favorite movie. . .The point would be that the boys would find a couple each week during your husband's absence.

We're still working on it, but she is warming up to the idea - I'm surprised she still wants me to aim the sprayer - I really thought letting her control it would be more helpful.
