I am a former classroom teacher that has had experience in the preschool, elementary and highschool setting but mostly taught in middle school in the United States. My favorite teaching years were the three I spent teaching science in a specialized setting for twice-exceptional kids in Middle School Science and Highschool biology. I am now a home educator for my 6-year-old daughter and nanny part time. I have a book I am working on publishing and a children's book and have a blog about educating kids pinchxeverything.blogspot.com.

comment How do you feed a picky eater?
Great idea to get them involved in the planning, but not such a great idea to insist on an emptied plate. I still feel the impulse to finish everything on my plate as an adult when I know I'm not hungry and don't need it. Not a fan of the "clean plate club"

comment How can I help my child to stay still?
GREAT Answer. For any one who has read this and is looking for ideas for fidgets that you can make at home, I had a classroom full of kids (Twice exceptional teacher for three years) that needed them and on a teacher's budget, I found these solutions to work well. pinchxeverything.blogspot.com/2012/05/…

comment At what age should a child be introduced to the Television?
I would take the opposite view, that instead of submitting to this peer pressure exerted by other parents, it gives you the opportunity (when they are old enough) to discuss Television and why you've made the choices you've made. You can also listen to their responses and respect those responses, but social development does and will happen with or without the TV being on a lot.

comment How do I get a young toddler to walk holding my hand?
Two choices are good, but examples like the naughty step aren't helpful. The objective of giving choices is to make sure the child HAS a choice. Telling him to choose between sitting on the naughty step and holding hands is really just giving a threat. I suggest Reading Parenting with Love and Logic.

comment How can I potty train a 12 month old?
There is actually a fourth part for them to be completely independent you don't mention here and that is being able to communicate about it effectively. They have to be able to say (or sign), "I have to go potty"

revised What are some strategies for raising a bilingual child?
This post was suggesting NO English at all, but then when kids go to preschool or school, they don't even know how to express their needs and you put them behind. Some minimal English is required.
