I am a former classroom teacher that has had experience in the preschool, elementary and highschool settings but mostly taught in middle school in the United States. My favorite teaching years were the three I spent teaching science in a specialized setting for twice-exceptional kids in Middle School Science and Highschool biology. I am now a home educator for my 7-year-old daughter and nanny part time. I have a book I am working on publishing and a children's book.

What a cool idea! Bet it would work great if she had an iPad to look at and remembered to check it. I have checklists at the house (computer desktop notes program and a bulletin board) They work when she remembers to look and we are at home (at least when I broken record the phrase, "Check your list."

If you are consulting with a doctor who prescribed a sleep medication, I'd guess there is more to this question than the typical problems an eight-year-old faces at bed-time. If a doctor prescribed the melatonin, It would be helpful to know what else you have already tried as well as what the doctor's advice was. Please elaborate by editing your question. If you aren't working with a doctor - please do before using medications!

Yep! That was pretty much how I felt about it too! As it was a job and not my own kid, I wasn't free to seek out a nice alternative, so as much as I adored this little girl otherwise - I was really glad when she potty-trained and graduated into the next class!

Thanks for the edit @ATS, for some reason, there was a glitch with this one when I wrote it and the numbering function wasn't working (everything was getting a two!) I had intended to come back to it - now I don't have to!!

I voted this up because I know you are right about Lavender oil and don't think the answer deserves the -1 it had. However, here at SE we encourage that statements like this one be backed up with research or at least experience to back-it up. You might fair better after taking a look at How to Answer and elaborating a little on why lavender oil and background music might help - or not.
