I'm getting distant from my father +1 for being "open about this", it is only through honest communication that you will both have a happy and healthy relationship. |

3 year old tantrums in public I recently gave my son his first public time-out. He wanted to climb on a train, a real train not something for kids. Trying to distract him we went to a playground. He tried repeatedly tried to run back to the train and when I stopped him he kicked and screamed. So I sat him down in a corner of the playground and explained to him that he was in time-out and was going to stay there until he calmed down. I felt like everyone there was glaring at me and thinking the worst of me. It was the right thing to do, he calmed down and we went on our way. You did the right thing. |

How do you address a child who cries and wants to play with everything? Our 2.5yr old is in a LeapFrog chair with a belt strap and I do not see us not using it anytime soon. He does not like being put in the chair, but once there he is ok with it. |

Toddler Plays in Bed and Won't go to Sleep I like both GdD and Valkyrie's answers. In contrast my son screams, yells, and cries for 5 minutes to an hour before falling asleep EVERY night, and for us that is normal. If we go into his room it just delays the crying and keeps him up later. |

How can I protect my ears when the baby cries? My recommendation would also be ear muffs, they are what I used. I had to keep a pair in the nursery and wear them when changing diapers. Electronic ones cost around $60, but mine are a simple pair that cost about $20.00. I do recommend buying them from a store where you can try them on though. You may need to wear them for extended periods of time and will want to make sure they are comfortable. |

What is a reasonable amount of time to wait before family visits your new baby? Two weeks into it and my wife and I were grateful for ANYONE coming over to the house and sit with the baby while we took a nap and had a decent meal together. It was great and I am very thankful for those that visited with us. |

How do I tell my parents that my wife and I are pregnant? That is awesome! |

Why not let a toddler share a bedroom with a baby? @Martha, my 2 yr old can climb into and out of a crib with amazing speed. I would not want him in a room alone with a newborn, he may treat it with the aggressive hugs and kisses that he gives our cats which would not be good for a newborn. |

How can I prevent my 2 year old from covering her face with a blanket when she sleeps? I have slept with a blanket over my head my entire life, I am more comfortable that way. When I am in a situation where I cannot, I wear a fleece hat or even use a pillow on top of my head. I don't think it will be a problem for your child, she may or may not grow out of it. I like Beofett's answer best. Maybe you could see if she would like to wear a hat to bed, a sleeping cap, instead of using a blanket? |

How do you keep up with a toddler? Just because your child is smashing cars does not mean you have to. You are an adult, you are free to act like it. Play with the cars in a way that keeps your interest and let the child play the way they play. Sometimes the two will mesh together and you will both play the same way for a little while, the child will learn from you and you from the child. I think it is important for my child to see alternative ways to play and the fact that I am on the floor with him playing appears to be more important to him than how I am playing. |

How not to lose patience with toddler @Torben Gundtofte-Bruun I am able to pull it of about half of the time. It is very hard, but I think I am getting better at it. |

How can I prevent my 9 month old from eating anything and everything? If you can figure out a sure-fire way to stop babies and toddlers from eating things they should not make sure you patent or trademark it, you will be wildly rich selling it. My child is 2 now and still puts just about everything in his mouth. |

Embarrassing experience with my nephew; Should I tell his parents? Personally, I would have mentioned it to the parents at the time that it happened for sure, but I do not think you did anything wrong. In your current position I would probably mention it to the parents letting them know up front that you feel some embarrassment over what happened, but then again I know some parents that it would be best never to bring it up as they are very particular about their children. Either way, I do not think you did anything wrong and my wife and I would be very glad that you helped out. |

How not to lose patience with toddler I try to make myself think logically, which is very hard to do with a misbehaving child in front of me, and think about how getting mad could possible improve the situation. I have yet to come up with a single instance where my yelling or being harsh would improve the situation and end with a quiet well behaved child. |

How do you get a primary schooler to continue doing chores when their friends don't have to? I believe the PET book guides you to not put anything you read in the book in practice until you have finished reading the book. That is really important because the techniques and lessons in the book rely on information given later in the book. It should be taken as a whole and not chapter by chapter. |

Installing car seat base…how tight is good enough? I put my knees on the base with all of my weight then tighten the belt. When done the base feels like it is a solid part of the car. In my Honda Element the back seats recline making it really easy to recline the seat, install the base, then bring the seat back up locking it in place. |

How do we discourage our infant from pulling hair? My wife and I both have long hair and our only solution at that age was to keep our hair out of his reach. In fact at 2 years old that is still our most often used method, but he has gotten much better at listening to us when we tell him it hurts. |

2 year old wont sleep I am sorry that I do not have an answer for you, but I am very curious about your question as some friends have had similar experiences. Did you previously co-sleep with your child? Did he previously sleep in a room with someone else? Have you recently moved him to a "grown-up bed" from a crib? |

Is it ok for my baby to sleep in his swing? We used a Graco swing a lot like this one and on some rough nights where Eli would not sleep in the crib we were able to get him to fall asleep in the swing. It saved our sanity a number of times. Ours had a choice of music, ocean waves, and a very creepy heart beat sound, he like each one of them at one time or another. |

What to do when the pinky is the only way to soothe a newborn? We did not follow the "happiest baby" method exactly, but we did attend a class where it was taught. The swaddling and shushing worked well for us until a certain age. So did firm patting on the back while rocking. I feel like we have lucked out in that our child was not really fond of pacifiers. |
