@anon: being free and loved is not a right that must be given, it's something you have to work for. Based on what the OP said, she made a lot of bad choices too by forcing a relationship that was obviously not working, so she too has to face the consequences of her choices.

I think social skills should also be taken into account, as they are as important - if not more important - than academic skills to thrive and be happy in life. Do you think homeschooled kids are at a disadvantage (or advantage) compared to other kids when it comes to making friends, etc?
