This is an excellent, well-researched answer!

@Beofett Agreed. Since my answer seems to get more attention than it deserves, I've been meaning to add some actual scientific evidence but just haven't gotten around to it. Your answer is an excellent one!

@torbengb Co-sleeping may not be a good option for your family if there's a light sleeper in the bed. There's also reduced benefit if mom isn't breastfeeding since someone still has to get out of bed for night feedings.

@tenpn I believe Dr. Sears is referring to nighttime separation anxiety. You're still there when baby wakes during the night, so baby doesn't learn to fear falling asleep. By the time they transition to their own beds, they're usually old enough to understand that mom and dad are close by.

comment How widespread is attachment parenting?
I agree that accepting a parenting style as dogma is a bad idea, but I think a label has value in communicating a concept. The person that suggested you shouldn't stop co-sleeping even though it doesn't work for your family obviously doesn't understand attachment parenting. Attachment parenting emphasizes exactly what you're doing: parenting in the way that feels right for your family. Their "Baby B's" are tools to use, not a strict code to which one must comply (though perhaps this isn't emphasized enough).
