comment Nearly 2 and doesn't comprehend speech
@DaveClarke Maybe it delays speech, but I don't think understanding. Anecdotally our ~18 month old doesn't talk much (single words) but understands quite a lot in two languages.

I agree with the suggestion of seeing a doctor to get the hearing checked. If you have severe hearing loss you'll still be able to hear some sounds, or for example hear that you are being called without hearing enough to understand words.

eh, the middle link is an easier read than the third, but it got hidden a bit in the gooblygook of URLs: xrl.us/bmziqs (link to scholarship.law.duke.edu).

@Beofett Yes, thanks. I thought "conflict" was a pretty good word for describing variations of "don't do that", "I did it", "I told you not to do it!". As far as I'm concerned there are only improperly applied corporal punishment. It doesn't work. You might think it does, but it causes real harm (that you might not immediately see) and long-term all studies I have seen say it causes (sometimes grave) harm. apa.org/news/press/releases/2002/06/spanking.aspx xrl.us/bmziqs ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2771618

comment Getting a kid to tell you Before they go to the bathroom
Excellent advice. We did the same thing with our daughter to get started using the potty. We have friends who "potty trained" their boys since they were babies -- though at that age it's as much training the parents to notice when the children need to or can go as training the babies.

comment How do I get my 6-month-old to sleep better at night?
At night time we've basically never let our kids cry for longer than it'd take us to get back to the bedroom from wherever in the house we are and they've both been "good sleepers". I'd second the suggestions about routines -- not necessarily a particular time, but have a specific rhythm to the end of the day (songs, quiet, bath, everything slower, whatever works for you -- but close to exactly the same every night).
