comment Microwaving supper for the children in a filthy microwave
Or better yet, don't use a microwave, use an oven. Microwaves can cause hot spots in food (colorado.edu/physics/2000/microwaves/hotspots.html) leading to burned tongues and mouths. I don't know about the chemical threat, but I hate burning the roof of my mouth.

Hence the limitation requirement. Still under the roof, still follow the rules-- and those rules should include a limit on conputer time when work hasn't been done.

comment How to get toddler to eat eggs?
@Bryce-- that is a shame. But I guess it's also a shame that everyone else gets to enjoy his delicious omelette.

I hope it works for you. Our boy is a good eater-- he complained loudly when he was two when he wasn't offered sushi-- so I don't want to go overboard on the suggestions, as they don't come from a parent of a picky eater. Our philosophy has been to just have only good food in the house, and let him eat what he wants, more or less when he wants. He's settled down to eating with us because the food is better than whatever he can scrounge in the cupboards, and is especially fun if he helps make it himself.

comment How do you teach a toddler rhythm and melody?
We did this with my son, except we bought Beatles Rock Band. He was hitting the drums rhythmically and singing along at the age of 2. @LennartRegebro-- how do you figure? Real instruments (violins, etc) are pretty damn expensive. Recorders are cheap, but man, they can cause some serious damage when used as a club.

comment 3 year old has a fit when arriving at daycare
Are you confident that he's not getting bullied or treated badly? That's another potential cause for separation anxiety-- of course, the teachers aren't going to say that anything bad's going on, but you can ask him why he has such problems. He's old enough to say if someone hit him or scratched him or the like.

comment What are the biggest expenses for a new baby?
Do you have friends that could have provided for: crib, crib mattress, linens, stroller, car seats, high chair, baby carrier*, rocking chair*, breast pump*, nursing pillow*, formula*, playpen*, swing*, bouncer, toys, books, and educational material, fall jackets, winter coats, swim suits, life jacket-- almost everything on your list can be provided by friends who have had kids before and are looking to get rid of their old baby stuff. And you live in a country with socialized medicine, but no disability leave for new mothers to cover that loss of income?

comment How to approach my little brother's addiction to TV and computer?
@Roy-- this sounds like a much, much deeper problem (or set of problems) than just TV/Internet usage. At his age, I was pretty deep into both TV and Internet, but was not cutting myself. In your shoes, I would seriously consider seeking the advice of a child psychologist who specializes in adolescents, rather than us. I mean, we are awesome, but we aren't that awesome.

@Kevin-- I agree wholeheartedly. Mind if I add that as another bullet point there?
