comment My son did badly in his AS levels because he didn't work
I have no idea about the American system and the UK system. Your question talks a lot about university and then says that the parents do not want to send their son to college. Does that mean they don't want to send their son to university, or is there something in between high school and university called college?

This seems very country specific and hard to decipher. What is an AS level? Is there a difference between college and university?

comment How to stop 1-yr old from kicking us while sleeping
We implement the 90-5-5 Rule. Baby (who is 3 in our case) takes up 90% of the bed (the middle), and we take 5% each (edges). This reduces the chances of kicking.

Certainly, start, if that's the question, but let him go at his own pace.

comment Does sleep training make sense for a baby with intermittent sleep difficulty?
Exactly: Ain't broke, don't "fix" it.

comment Reading to a colicky infant?
At 4 weeks, she won't really appreciate the fine nuances of Tolstoy, so it is not really worth it. Just talk to her in a soothing voice. (And, it does pass.)

@user3143: Seriously? It's common sense. You can't learn hard mathematics unless you've learnt the easy mathematics.

comment Are clothes needed for a newborn?
One more point is that clothes are good for swaddling the baby, keeping it fairly tightly wrapped so that it maintains the feeling of closeness it had in the womb.

Persistence. You could also walk away.

comment Is organic whole cow's milk better than “toddler milk” powder for a 1 year old?
I'd say YES. If the toddler is eating regular proper meals, then don't waste your money on something you already admit is pushed by a lobby. Formula won't hurt your child, but it does hurt your pocket.
