comment Is my 14 year step daughter a bad influence on my children?
@Tiffany: I really don't see any way to resolve this, except possibly having a very open, honest discussion about it where you explain to her the possibly grave consequences of disregarding the culture she is now living in and try to find ways for her to deal with it that she finds acceptable.

@Tiffany: That is some rather crucial information you left out there. So she was in fact not entirely brought up with your cultural values and instead has been socialized during some of the most formative years in a culture that views yours as insanely oppressive from which escape is the only appropriate action. And that's what she will want to do at the earliest opportunity. Scolding and timeouts will only make this worse.

comment How to persuade my father to stop physically abusing my mother?
@SalvadorDali: no, no, a hundred times NO!!! That is the most dangerously idiotic thing I have read all day! Escalating the violence is NOT a solution in any sense unless you're willing to kill the guy and go to prison over it. Otherwise you're just as likely to cause him to use lethal violence as to scare him into stopping. Oh, and of course as Tim says that "crap" people like this usually were made so by their own parents through the application of violence.

comment Does good cop/bad cop work with children?
@wberry: perhaps the best approach is to distinguish between rules which must be backed by reasons (and apply to everyone), requests ("please do this for me because it would make me happy") and commands (rare but important, urgent, no questions asked). And as I mentiond before, this is of course too complex for toddlers.

comment Does good cop/bad cop work with children?
@Miles Route: That is a horrible, appallingly authoritarian approach to childreading, and the exact opposite of reasonable.

comment Does good cop/bad cop work with children?
@MilesRout: It's neither wrong nor absurd. Sure, the rules can be different, but there must be an understandable, explainable reason for that (e.g. Daddy skipped lunch because of work). If the only reason you can give is "because I say so and I can make you do what I want" then you're basically teaching the child that might makes right and whoever has the power sets the rules. That's not something you want them to internalize. Obviously, this is probably beyond a toddler's understanding, but it's good to get into the habit early.
