A qualified chemist who somehow drifted into web development. I've learned (to a greater or lesser degree of accuracy) PHP and JavaScript, and would like to learn something completely different for the sake of it. I'm a weirdo who actually enjoys reading (and sometimes writing) technical documentation.

comment My son wants to bring a present to a birthday party where “no presents” was specified on the invitation
There are plenty of charities which do good works without any associated homophobia, transphobia, and forcing religion on captive audiences. Any of them would be better than the Salvation Army.

And JRR Tolkien was known to his friends as Ronald. For that matter, Charles Stapleton Lewis was generally known as Jack.

comment Preventing motion sickness in a baby on a plane
I always thought kids were less susceptible to motion sickness than adults. That was my experience when our family took the ferry between Britain and Ireland a few times a year every year of my childhood. (Ferries these days are larger and have stabilisers. Doing the same trip now as an adult I still don't get sea sick.) Maybe babies are different.

comment What should I teach my teenager about condoms?
It might also be worth mentioning that the condom-dispensing machines which are ubiquitous in fast-food, pub, and service-station toilets are often broken and will frequently swallow your money without dispensing anything in return.

comment How do you handle a teacher that teaches pseudo science?
"If the teacher proposes creation science with a basis of fact" ... he should publish in a Peer Reviewed journal and wait for his Nobel Prize.

comment How do you curb “tattletale” behavior in a toddler?
Fair enough. That makes sense. (But I don't think it's any harm to clarify that, as you have done.)

comment Why do kisses stop a child from hurting?
+1. The placebo effect is powerful and strange. It's about our beliefs and expectations. It's about the cultural meaning of a treatment.

Because it is worse to tell on someone who does something bad, wrong, or cruel than it is to do something bad, wrong, or cruel?

comment How should a parent react when their child comes out of the closet to them?
@Beska. Thanks. As you can see, the bulk of it is quoted. It's a good article: I'd suggest following the link and reading it in full.

comment Ways to find (non-religious) volunteer opportunities for your children?
@Torben. Scouting (especially in the USA) doesn't exactly count as "non-religious".

comment Is it normal for a toddler belly to last into the pre-school years?
Please don't fat-shame five-year-olds. Please don't fat-shame anyone.
