I am a teacher of Navi to 6th and 7th graders as well as a technology teacher to grades k-3 in a Jewish Day School in Stamford, CT. I am married and have four wonderful children who keep me on my toes.

children won't starve. You are just creating eating disordered behavior by forcing eating when unwanted and making snack into a reward when it is in fact a necessity.

comment How do you address a 5 year old that has problems accepting corrections?
@Marie Worry, teaching bad school habits at a young age can be difficult to overcome and the teacher is doing that. Either insist the teacher does it or go to admin. This is very important no matter how advanced the child it.

@Marie try making mistakes IN FRONT of her, so you can demonstrate how you deal with it. Also, speak to the teacher about giving differentiated homework, so she will be challenged, if she is not challenged the problem will continue as she will continue to always be right.

comment When can children understand the concept of lying?
Torok I would never ask a child if he/she lied. You know they are lying and to ask them if they did is only asking for another lie. As well, in this example it is obvious why he lied so why make him explain it, simple tell him he shouldn't lie and then do some appropriate disciplinary action prior to giving him extra hugs, kisses, and play time.

Of course we give her a chance to play after school, with me, with her siblings and by herself. I am talking about increased tantrums, crying, and short fuse. In terms of ADD, I am not asking for a diagnosis right now and it would be a waste of time to get her tested as it may just be age appropriate behavior, although I don't think so. I would not medicate her this early anyway. We are trying to teach her skills but it can be very frustrating for her and us, so I was hoping for some suggestions.

comment How do I help my 3 month old sleep better through the night?
@Beofett No official study I have seen, however I have four kids, all with many friends, and simply from noticing, those with pacifiers all the time do seem to have initial issues speaking and being understood, even when they do both (which is not often) to take the pacifier from their mouths.

comment Are there techniques for sleep training that actually teach a child how to sleep?
What techniques do you use for yourself, at least then we would know what you were trying to teach.

I would also ask for the long term effects on YOUR body from carrying the baby this way!

What is it exactly you want to teach your child, a technique to fall asleep? If you have a technique that helps you fall asleep that a child can also employ I would love to hear it, but I am unsure what you are trying to teach your child. Sleeping is important but I have found that the only way I can fall asleep it through trial and error of many different things to do...so please let me know the technique you want to teach your child so you can teach me too!

@Chad After school is 4:00, no nap, she must go to sleep at night. But thanks for the idea.

@beofett She can't hold her attention and she looses her cool. Crying, tantrums, frustration. To tired and going crazy.

@DA01 exactly. She can not be diagnosed at this age, but is dispalying symptoms. As well, displaying the symptoms at school my be harder to see as she is four and some of those behaviours are 'age appropriate' and the day is structured to minimize them. And the H part is defiantly missing, she is not hyperactive.

comment How do I discipline my 4 year old for not playing with schoolmates?
@LennartRegebro No. I want my child to stop ALWAYS saying no I don't want to play with you in a rude way EVERY time someone asks to join the game.

@DA01 if you would like to take out the 'offending' part of the question go ahead, but I would rather that that is posted as a new, related question. I am happy to post it if you do not think it is redundant.

comment How should I handle academic disagreement with a teacher?
I do, however, only when I am please with the answer, and I like to wait a bit to see if there are any other answers, I find on this site some people answer questions up to two weeks after it is posted and I have found once the correct answer is marked no one else answers. @ahsteele

Although children this young can not be considered bullies, this behavior is bullying behavior and must be curbed before it comes a habit and my child ends up being a bully.
