I am a teacher of Navi to 6th and 7th graders as well as a technology teacher to grades k-3 in a Jewish Day School in Stamford, CT. I am married and have four wonderful children who keep me on my toes.

I am a little bit confused. Are you a niece or the aunt? In other words, are you a peer of this child or a grown up?

comment At what age or developmental milestones is it safe to leave children unattended?
Very true (both my husband and I work full time) however research should be done either into after school activities or a friend that can help out. I sometimes have an 8th grade student stay with my kids briefly and then I help her with her homework instead of paying her.

@LennartRegebro it seems to me that if you are asking the question you have an underlying concern. Sorry for not staying on topic, however I still maintain, don't sweat it, the language will come.

@VesaLinja-aho as I said in the comment below, simply going into a classroom will show multiple intelligences.

@VesaLinja-aho as a teacher I completely disagree, learning styles are easily identified in a classroom and should be used to teach each child best.

comment How do you balance time for playdates vs family time?
Unfortunately I do not find that any of these answers actually address the question of HOW to deal with the problem. They all restate the problem in different forms and bring out all the problems. Many of you seem to think playdates are not important however, as kids get older, and here I am talking as early as pre-k and certainly my second grader, they almost need playdates to keep up with the social scene which is so important for self esteem. As well they enjoy them. Family time is a given and must be time spent playing with the children or doing projects or other focused time; not only fam

My kids each have one activity a week and that is all. We also underprogram our kids, but with school getting out at 3:35 and bedtimes between 6:30 and 7:45 (4 kids spread out) we can't do playdates during the week and we would like to keep Sunday as family time to go out and do things together

comment How can I teach a child to keep trying after a failure?
@LennartRegebro Outside help meaning first the teacher. And no, she won't think anything is wrong with her if you get her tested. It can be explained in understandable and positive terms. If the parents feel it is a good idea the child will feel the same way. And if you are worried then it is not premature, in fact, if something is found that can be 'fixed' early intervention is the best policy!

I disagree about an umbrella stroller in the beginning, until the child can sit up on his/her own they do not provide enough support.

comment At what age should a child be introduced to the Television?
Why are you introducing TV, believe me it will come when it comes. To me it is not something that gets introduced it is something that become a part of life. Limit all screen time, teach discretion, and try to go for some educational stuff. My 8 year old will say, my friends watch this, but I won't because I won't learn anything.

What type of carrier are you referring to, it isn't clear from your question.

comment Recommended method for checking a baby is not too cold
@Peter Torok When I had a baby in CT in January and another in February (obviously not in the same year:)) this is the directions I got from my pediatrician. I never worried about checking to see if the baby was too cold. If we were outside for a very long time I added a blanket, but other than that I worried more about the baby overheating.

@TorbenGundtofte-Bruun The whole thing was great and funny. You hit every point exactly, but the whole subject was funny and we enjoyed it, sorry if that bothers you.
