I'm a 46 (hm had to check with the wife, yes i'm 46) year old father of 5 and I know i'm not a perfect parent. i've had a lot of practical experience. their ages are of a range where I can see that the lessons that I'm giving my 6yo today have had a positive, long term effect on the kid that became the 20 year old.

Sometimes I'm not necessarily agreeable. However, I will never be disrespectful. Opinions differ between people as much as people and kids differ. I believe that as long as we all remain aware of our differences, disagreements can be productive.

I have found that the things that worked the best with my children are consistency and having the courage to be the parent. That means that sometimes they don't like our decisions, but I can live with that because the goals are much more impacting than a kids instant total gratification and approval.

Whoever you are looking at my profile, you're reading (and hopefully posting) here because you care enough about your kid to seek information and perhaps improve your method. That drive for self-improvement will translate to your kid.

Congratulations and good luck.

comment Giving a baby a bottle while in a car seat of a moving vehicle…should this be avoided?
ABSOLUTELY without a doubt do i concur wholeheartedly with the :15 min break. I made a post in another thread about travelling with babies/children, and the value of a :15 minute stop is . . . invaluable. You know where you're going and you know how long it's going to take. don't be in such a hurry, you don't have to make time. And if you do have to make time, you should probably try to make alt arrangements for the baby.

comment How can I address issues that concern me at daycare (and school) without creating tension with the staff?
Excellent. Truly, DQdlM should have been able to have a reasonable discussion directly with the daycare person and expect a reasonable response. More importantly, the person should have been aware of her own health issue and taken their own steps. More MORE importantly, the director should have been aware acted. And with the whole changing thing: Yes it can be difficult, but unless there are exceptions, changing daycares should always be a palatable option. If the worker is going to sulk because of this relatively trivial issue, it may lead to changing anyway.

comment How can we avoid tantrums over sweets and cakes?
Absolutely with the periferal family. of course, you may not be able to get them on board, grandparents are like that. but if it's an occasion that's limited to them alone, then it will become their problem not yours. And when the kid starts hollering about wanting candy from them, and they won't give it up, and they call you for help "You should have followed my rule." (yes, personal experience)

I think he's talking plainly about the long term health effects of too many sweets, and that if a 2 yo is eating daily sweets and cakes, that child is probably doomed to a life of health problems related to sugar/fat overdose as a child.

comment How can I stop my toddler from playing with electrical outlets and plugs?
@Torben Gundtofte-Bruun as stated, the electricity that comes out of a normal, functioning household outlet is not enough elec to do anything more than tingle the hand/forearm of a normal, functioning human. A car can and does kill as well, but we still let our kids learn by getting behind the wheel. I knew this would be a downvote factory for me, but i guess it's the difference between personalities.
