I'm a 46 (hm had to check with the wife, yes i'm 46) year old father of 5 and I know i'm not a perfect parent. i've had a lot of practical experience. their ages are of a range where I can see that the lessons that I'm giving my 6yo today have had a positive, long term effect on the kid that became the 20 year old.
Sometimes I'm not necessarily agreeable. However, I will never be disrespectful. Opinions differ between people as much as people and kids differ. I believe that as long as we all remain aware of our differences, disagreements can be productive.
I have found that the things that worked the best with my children are consistency and having the courage to be the parent. That means that sometimes they don't like our decisions, but I can live with that because the goals are much more impacting than a kids instant total gratification and approval.
Whoever you are looking at my profile, you're reading (and hopefully posting) here because you care enough about your kid to seek information and perhaps improve your method. That drive for self-improvement will translate to your kid.
Congratulations and good luck.

What is the best way to respond if my child is picked on by other children? Zero tolerance rules bug the crap out of me. If there's a bully/victim fight, zero tolerance means they get to claim some kind of victory even if they're the only one that believes it. The fact that a principle can hide behind a rule "we have a zero tolerance policy" absolves them from dealing with it and doing their job. |

How to get toddler to eat eggs? It's nach-o ordinary egg. And it sounds pretty daggone tasty I'll tell you that much. I would think that the crepe-like served as part of a toast sandwich would be worth a try. Kids like playing with their food, and he seems willing to try it over and over, so he may be ok with it. |

How to encourage toddler twins to share? Absolutely. Sharing isn't something that kids that age can really wrap their heads around. Demonstrations of desired behaviour from you, coupled with words and tone, will be effective. |

How to stop a baby of trying to reach things that he really wants? Put a tick for me in the "never worked" column. My current guests let their kid walk around with their iphones for craps sake and as a technophile, it drives me crazy. "he's gonna drop it on the floor and wander off, and one of MY kids is gonna step on the thing." |

Toys for a 1 year old I can't help but think that the recommendations to avoid media for children of this age group are exaggerated so as to purposefully overshoot the goal. IOW saying "please no media!" will encourage parents to limit it to a resonable amount. I'm not advocating jacking them in, but there's plenty of redeeming media for kids these age that isn't on Disney or Nick. |

Email and social media for pre-teens @JeffAtwood I'm back a year later (= Alcohol is controlled and taxed by the govt. an 11 yo logging on to facebook (at home) won't wrap the car around a tree. Reason I responded was because in May when my oldest turned 21, I took him up to a dive for his first legal drink. Condoning by complicity? Well, he was living on his own, paying for his own school, bought his own 2nd car. wtf do I have to say about a 20 yo bachelor buying beer? Nothing... Except "here's your birthday shot." |

How does one address Christianity with their children in a mixed faith marriage? Yea see that's ridic. Whenever I go to Christian Days (xmas, easter, etc) with the wiff, people know me and they say hi and they kind of slyly say "we've missed you!" but it's like walking thru Sears . . . nobody really bothers me about it. "Do unto others" right? |

What do you do with the cousins who, at birthday parties insist on opening the presents when they are not the guest of honor? I suppose that works . . . but it's the chicken way out! (= JK of course. Maybe it's just A-Hole me, but I rather enjoy telling fambly members when I'm tired of them. Thins out my calender and gives me more time to spend with the people I actually like. |
