Lapsed Catholic. Luddite Geek. Shy Chatterbox. A mass of contradictions wrapped in an open enigma.

Some days, I really regret making http://stackoverflow.com/a/3638034/14250 a comm. wiki question. Then I get back to helping people solve problems rather than trying to help myself score rep. (Man, but 370 upvotes. Three. Hundred. And. Seventy.)

comment How to teach a toddler how to treat a book?
You've actually got two issues here; the first is that he's damaging books, and the second is that he doesn't "read books the way they're supposed to be read". Seems like there should be one question for "how to treat a book", and another for "how to read a book", as they're very different, and I think they're actually different developmental stages.

Agree with Torben. "In terms of what is 'normal' or what the milestones of development are I have always avoided the literature because all the studies and advice are different and it just sends me into a tizzy."This isn't really appropriate for the user in this case, who's clearly more comfortable with studies and milestones and is asking for them.

While you can't learn happiness, I think that certain things such as confidence in your skills, comfort in social situations and behaving within a structured environment are all things that can be taught/learnt and contribute to your happiness.

"I can't imagine how this can be learned or taught. To me, either a toddler is having this, or not. If (s)he is not feeling happy, secure and loved, the problem is almost always with us parents / teachers." - Isn't this a bit self-contradictory? I mean, if the problem is with the parents and teachers, then it's something that, while it may not be able to be taught, is exactly the kind of thing that is under the control of the parents/teachers.

@Karlson: I agree, but I think Aqua's concern about focusing on a 2-year old's accomplishments rather than on the environment in which they can accomplish things is valid. It's easy for that to turn into pressure to meet a fairly arbitrary "standard" at a very early period.

+1 for getting your kids to 'help' you. Spending time with your kids and giving them responsibility is a big step towards getting them interested for the right reasons.

-1: Sorry but this isn't answering the question, it's bordering on soapboxing, which we need to start jumping on better. meta.parenting.stackexchange.com/questions/34/…
