Lapsed Catholic. Luddite Geek. Shy Chatterbox. A mass of contradictions wrapped in an open enigma.

Some days, I really regret making http://stackoverflow.com/a/3638034/14250 a comm. wiki question. Then I get back to helping people solve problems rather than trying to help myself score rep. (Man, but 370 upvotes. Three. Hundred. And. Seventy.)

+1: Great edit; the idea that you won't remember the playing with fondness is a really critical idea. I personally have the other feeling; I can remember beating incredibly difficult challenges with glee, but there are so many TV shows I wish I'd never spent the time on.

-1: My issue with this answer is that you seem to regret the time spent, but the rest of your answer is fairly positive about the outcomes. I'd appreciate a little edit to say what it is you actually regret.

I love this question, but think it'd be better asked on boardgames.stackexchange.com, so I'm going to ask the mods to migrate it if possible.

Just a question, why is Knex a significantly higher quality tool for learning creativity than Minecraft? Why is a GI Joe a better tool for storytelling than a Lego game? Why is a game considered passive amusement, when they literally don't work without active engagement?

comment 5 yr old son behaving sexually
One question here is important and no-one seems to have covered, if he sleeps in the same room, will he have seen you and his father doing this kind of stuff? It seems obvious, but kids do imitate stuff, so if his dad has done this kind of thing, he'll see it as something "grown-ups do".

comment Enocurage or discourage playing video games to 4+ year old son
@SevenSidedDie My favourite was the one that gave a child some toys to play with, then put the TV on, and watched their behaviour. The control was not "some other distraction", but just not putting the TV on. Study's Conclusion: TV causes inattentiveness. Other potential conclusion: Kids can be distracted.

+1: This is really important. If you want your child to respect your opinion about games, they have to believe you know what you're talking about.

-1: Looking around, I see an awful lot of successful game players over the years, and a lot of conflicting studies that mirror the same ones they applied to books, radio, TV and the automobile, generally blown out of proportion by the papers.

comment How long did it take your baby to like daycare?
+100. My 2 year old is currently performing Masterpiece Theatre every morning: "We're going to nursery, yaaaay!" and then when we get to the door "No Daddy, NOOOOOO WAAAAH". One suggestion is to ask the nursery to take some pictures of her throughout a day to see her normal behaviour when you're not there as an audience.
