comment Introducing Shakespeare
There are plenty of modern movies based on classics, and not just Shaekspeare. The movie "Ten things I hate about you" is Taming of the Shrew. The musical "West Side Story" is Romeo and Juliette (with the ending changed). The film "O Brother Where Art Thou" is based on Homer's Oddesey.

comment How to encourage toddler to not throw food?
@Rory Alsop: Of course they have internal motivation, the strongest there is. They're hungry.

I think that dessert as an incentive for anything is not a good idea. I grant that it works, but it adds an exterior incentive to something that needs to come from internal motivation.

comment How do you control the quantity of sweets and junk food a pre-teen eats?
The Jesuits (I think) used to say "give me a child for the first seven years and he will be mine for life". This is true for almost any habits formed.

comment Is an expensive stroller worth it?
regarding the price/quality issue, I was told that the better quality means that the stroller will alst for more than one child. In my area, the expensive ones were 4-5 times the price of the mid-range. We're not planning on more than 4 kids, so even if we need to buy a new mid-range stroller for each one, it's still cheaper than buying the expensive one.

comment Is punishment necessary?
I'd like to add to this, saying that the best form of punishment is the direct consequence. If you throw a toy across the room, you can't have that toy for a while, if you throw your supper on the floor, you go to bed hungry. Obviously, this is just my opinion, and I don't have research to back it up.

As an addition to what you're doing, get a safety breaker and test it annually. My wife, when she was 5, stuck a knitting needle in a live socket. The breaker worked, and she was fine if a little shocked. I'm a huge believer in multi-layered prevention.

comment How can I help my child develop social intelligence?
Can you clarify what you mean by social intelligence? Is it just the ability to get on with people and understand social cues?

comment We're looking to get pregnant - what can we do to optimize our chances?
I'm generally agianst prescribing things for this. The entire point of your existence, biologically speaking, is to reproduce. It will work itself out easily once you step out of the way. Stop using birth control, and go on with your lives. When the body is ready, it'll happen. Don't see any professionals until 9 months have passed.

I'll add that school is also about learning to socialize with your peers.

comment When can I cover my baby with a blanket in her crib?
@Saiboogu: That hadn't occurred to me, as the question mentioned choking specifically. It's a good point, though I think infants will occasionally wake in a panic anyway, no?
