How can we help my 7 year old quit sucking her thumb? I'm making this a comment because it's purely anecdotal: I sucked my thumb until I was about seven. My parents (read: mother) told me that if I stopped, I would get big girl furniture for my room. So I did; if I thought about thumbsucking, I'd read a book instead (reading required both hands) or I'd go play with toys or something. At night, I'd sleep with my right hand (my preferred thumb) under my pillow and/or under my head so that I wouldn't suck it by accident. It was hard, but Big Girl Furniture for my room was way more important to me than thumbsucking. I also realize it was bribery, ha! |

How do you respond to a teenager who has started to smoke? You'll also have your sense of smell and taste diminished significantly. Like food? Enjoy ash! |

How do you respond to a teenager who has started to smoke? Also, the terminal patients are usually much older, and "rebellious youth" will likely not feel the pressing nature of the message. |

What are important legal and financial steps for new parents? As this can differ from nation to nation, based on legalities and whatever legal system they have in place, if you could specify your location (even something as general as North America) that would help significantly. :) |

When and how should I teach my kids to touch-type? If you go with the software route, I emphatically suggest using Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing which is what I used growing up. It taught me home rows, and the basic touch-typing skills that I then perfected in instant messenger conversations. With eight people. All at once. Nothing like IRC/AIM to force a person to type faster and better. |

Can I save rice cereal for short periods of time? I think this belongs on cooking.stackexchange.com and isn't really on topic here. =\ |

How should a parent react when their child comes out of the closet to them? @tomjedrz This is a wiki-style site. If you feel that's the better title for this question, you can edit it to reflect that. |

How should a parent react when their child comes out of the closet to them? No, I think the answer could very well include such feelings. The "advice" then would simply be not to be directly insulting to the child and to be conscientious of the words that you say. Disapproval is perfectly acceptable -- how you display that disapproval is what matters. |
