I am a Speech-Language Pathologist with more than 30 years experience.
I have learned so much from my favorite teachers - children and their caregivers. I am indebted to them and thankful that so many have shared their journey with me.

What should I do about my 3 month old baby wanting to nurse all night? Attaching a link to the AAP statement would be helpful. :) |

How can I handle a child that claims medical problems as a bad excuse? @DVK Probably because we got lots of practice as kids outsmarting our parents. :P |

How to child-proof my home for a toddler? This question is very similar to "What home-safety aspects should new parents consider?" which is a SE community wiki. You will find great suggestions under that question. Since this question is so similar it may need to be closed as a duplication. |

Why would my 9 week old refuse to nurse from breast? FYI:The Nuk bottle is the same as the Gerber bottle. I thought it might help to make this clarification if searching for this item. |

Are vitamin supplements necessary for newborns? @WilliamGrobman Breastfed babies do deplete their supply of iron at around 6 months of age and iron supplements are usually introduced then if needed. However, my response was limited by the question about newborns. :) |

What should parents consider when selecting a pacifier? The Journal of the American Dental Association reports that children who continue to use a pacifier past age 2 increased their risk of developing protruding front teeth and an improper bite, which can affect speech production. Here is the associated link. |

How can we discipline our toddler? @BBM Positioning is key. If dealing with a biter or head banger, I step behind the child holding their arms firmly by their side with my arms fully extended to keep distance and avoid kicking or head banging. If older, I cross their arms at wrist behind their back at waist level. This gives me leverage and protection and keeps them safe too until they calm and recover. |

Why would my 9 week old refuse to nurse from breast? @BBM I am not sure. A full evaluation would tell us more about the oral motor function. Without it, I would just be speculating. :-) |

Why would my 9 week old refuse to nurse from breast? @BBM I was not familiar with the Castillo-Morales method you mentioned. After research, I realized that I use the methods but was trained by other who did not reference Castillo-Morales. I appreciate the info! The Playtex Nurser is a good place to start. I have a list at work that I'll share later just in case the first try doesn't work. |

Should I be concerned that my 3 year old is not able to pronounce an 'r' sound? @Darwy I understand your concern. Turn your focus on doing some of the activities above in fun and know that you are supporting his /r/ with no "browbeating". |

Why would my 9 week old refuse to nurse from breast? Your experience is consistent with research that "nipple confusion" is more likely by babies that have difficulty with mom's breast too and is not true confusion but rather difficulty with the process of sucking. No problems are reported here with sucking but more preference for the bottle. Rarely are midwives & nurses trained to address the problem. The La Lache League International <llli.org/> is a site for lactation information. |

Is there any scientific evidence in favor of co-sleeping with children? @Bill So sorry for your loss. My friend's 4 month old also died while co-sleeping with her with no drugs, etc involved. The risk is so great and the consequences unspeakable. |

should my daughter wear orthotics? Medical information is outside the scope of this site. ALWAYS pursue medical assessment or a second or third opinion if you are concerned about your child's health. I recommend this question be closed due to the medical nature. |

What size schoolbag is good for a first-grader? @TorbenGundtofte-Bruun In our schools, shouldered bags are hung over the back of desks or chairs. Wheeled types cannot be but require a space in the room for storage. This has created tripping hazards/limited space in the classrooms. They also take up valuable space in the hallways. Imagine 400 of these pulled in the halls at the same time, this requires significantly more space than a backpack. Therefore, our local schools have banned them. |
